Federal Way Public Schools Celebrates the Brand-New Star Lake and Evergreen schools with a Ribbon Cutting and Tours 

Federal Way, Wash. — Federal Way Public Schools invited scholars, family, and the community to a joint ribbon-cutting event to celebrate the completion of the brand-new Star Lake Elementary and Evergreen Middle School on Wednesday, October 12, 2022. Both schools are the latest of eight schools to be rebuilt thanks to voter approval of the school construction bond in 2017. Guests enjoyed a formal ribbon-cutting program before participating in scholar-led building tours highlighting key areas of each school building. 

The ribbon-cutting program included remarks by Superintendent Dr. Dani Pfeiffer, FWPS Board President Hiroshi Eto, and Evergreen and Star Lake scholars and principals, as well as videos showcasing building features and scholar reactions from each school. 

“We could not be here today without our community, leaders, teachers, and students. It has taken all of us to be here, now,” shared Evergreen Student Body President, Scott Ingram. He continued, “Our new school demonstrates Federal Way’s shared vision and commitment to our youth and their bright futures.” 

Planning, designing, and building each school was a collaborative effort led by FWPS Capital Projects team, CBRE, BN Builders, and McGranahan Architects. Through several design planning and engagement sessions with scholars, staff and the community, the resulting schools reflect the needs and concerns of all involved. 

The schools share a unique design, with a few shared common areas, which include a sprawling library, Commons with an operable wall for separate cafeterias, and a Family Connection Center. Evergreen’s three-story wing allows each middle school grade to have its own level, and Star Lake’s two-story wing allows its youngest students quick access to all amenities on the first floor, while older students enjoy the second. 

“Our new schools will serve as a hub for improved learning, and will enhance the student experience with embedded technology, flexible working spaces, and other thoughtful design implementations based on the latest research for scholar engagement and academic achievement.” shared Superintendent Dr. Pfeiffer during the program. “I'm excited for the thousands of young people who will enjoy the new schools now and over many years to come. Thank you for your voice, dedication, and investment.”
