Scholars Join in Hour of Code to Enhance Computer Science Skills
Technology is transforming every industry across the world. STEM and computing occupations are the fastest-growing, high paying, and largest sector of all new wages in the United States. In order to prepare for a future where computer science skills are essential, Federal Way Public Schools (FWPS) scholars participated in Hour of Code, a global event that took place during Computer Science Education Week December 5-9, 2022.
The Hour of Code is designed to demystify coding and show anybody can be a computer scientist. This year, 14,454 FWPS scholars in kindergarten through 12th grade learned the basics of programming and computer science through digital and unplugged exercises like creating a mobile app, building a game, coding a digital dance routine, solving code puzzles, and finding coding solutions in Minecraft: Education Edition. These experiences help scholars build skills that connect to post-secondary education and careers.
This effort is in support of the district’s strategic plan Goal 3 and 5. FWPS encourages and supports schools to take part in various STEM activities including Hour of Code to meet our measure of progress, “All Scholars having STEM/STEAM Experiences” toward post-secondary pursuits.
“[Hour of Code] helped me learn the fundamentals of computer science/ coding. It provided easy to use tools that made it more simple to understand the concept. Connecting blocks and testing the Minecraft simulator helped me understand how significant trial and error is to a final product. It expanded my knowledge, creativity and sparked interest in my mind on something I would want to pursue.“ – 11th grade scholar at Federal Way High School
Computer science develops students’ critical thinking and computational skills and shows them how to create new and innovate existing technologies. It encompasses the study of computers and algorithmic processes, including principles, software and hardware designs, applications, and the impact on society. FWPS believes that each and every scholar brings limitless potential, gifts, and talents. FWPS is proud to bring back Hour of Code to our scholars and provide diverse learning opportunities to help our scholars learn, thrive, and succeed.
