Memorial Field Groundbreaking Celebration Recap

Federal Way, Wash. — Federal Way Public Schools hosted a groundbreaking event for the new Memorial Field on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, to celebrate the start of construction on the new athletic facility. Several members of the FWPS community came together in celebration including elected officials, community leaders, district leadership, scholars, and families.

The current Memorial Field is over fifty years old and showing significant signs of deterioration. In 2017, voters approved a school construction bond enabling the district to rebuild the aging structure and eight schools. The groundbreaking event marked this milestone in the project’s progress. Construction will begin in early February, and the athletic facility is expected to be completed in time for the football and soccer season.

Highlights of the new modernized design include:

  • New Turf and New Track Surface
Heavier weight turf and brand-new upgraded track surface.
  • Increased Capacity in Two New Grandstands
Total capacity for 4,000 individuals in grandstands, an increase of approximately 700 seats between home and visitor sides.
  • Upgraded Team Rooms
New, improved team rooms, as well as two additional team rooms
  • Upgraded Safety and Security Features
New perimeter fencing, additional security cameras, and facility access controls.

Throughout the design process, the architects engaged with and heard feedback from scholars, parents, and community members, in addition to district and school staff. These individuals provided valuable insight that helped create a design for an athletic facility that will best serve FWPS scholars, families, and the surrounding community for decades to come.

When construction begins, there may be some changes in the day-to-day activities in the neighborhood. If you have any questions or challenges, you may contact the FWPS Capital Projects team at 253-945-BOND (2663) from 8 a.m.–5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
