Illahee Middle School Ribbon Cutting Celebration Recap

Federal Way community celebrates the completion of Illahee Middle School with a ribbon-cutting and tours

Federal Way Public Schools held a ribbon-cutting celebration for the brand-new Illahee Middle School on Monday, September 22, 2025. FWPS staff, Illahee Middle School families, elected officials, and community members, including many former, current, and prospective Illahee scholars, gathered for the event.

The event marked the completion of construction and featured remarks from Superintendent Dr. Dani Pfeiffer and other key members of the FWPS and Illahee community. Following the program, those in attendance were invited to explore the new campus through self-guided tours to view the improvements for themselves and speak with the construction and architect teams. Illahee Middle School swag was also available for guests to enjoy.

Illahee Middle School is the last of the eight aging schools to be rebuilt under the phase 2 school construction bond passed in 2017. The project addressed overcrowding, deteriorating facilities, and security issues, among other concerns. Beyond a new and modern school building, scholars are now enjoying improved security, a Learning Resource Center, a learning garden, and a renovated gym with updated features. Working closely with the architect team, the facility was also able to retain distinct features from its previous iteration, like the towering trees centered within the courtyard, and little touches such as unique brick inlays that can be found throughout the campus.

Additionally, in partnership with the Seattle Seahawks RAVE Foundation, students have access to a soccer mini-pitch that is also open to the public after school hours. The new addition is an exciting opportunity for scholars and the whole community to enjoy the pitch year-round and is the first mini-pitch to have lighting so that activities can take place later into the evening.

“Today marks a historic milestone, the completion of the final school rebuilt as part of the 2017 voter-approved bond,” shared Superintendent Dr. Dani Pfeiffer. “This school represents the strength of the Illahee community, and Royal pride is already evident and now scholars will have the opportunity to learn and thrive in a space designed just for them.”
