FWPS Life After High School College and Career Fair Offers Future Possibilities for Middle and High School Scholars

Federal Way Public Schools hosted the annual Life After High School College and Career Fair yesterday, Wednesday, October 25, at Todd Beamer High School.

From 6-8 p.m., nearly 500 middle and high school scholars and their families attended the event, excited to discover more about the many potential opportunities for their future. The TBHS Great Hall held booths from over 50 higher education, vocational, military, and other groups for scholars to learn about and gain insight from the presenters, and classrooms offered a variety of panels and workshops.

During the event, groups held presentations on a range of topics for upcoming graduates such as how to pick a college, requirements and expectations for prospective college athletes, how to apply for college financial aid and scholarships, direct admission to college through the Guaranteed Admissions Program (GAP), Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and other panels and workshops.

Scholar attendees appreciated the event, whether they were middle school students curious about what life after high school could look like, or high school scholars looking at leads for their next steps. Jeremiah, a Decatur junior with an interest in athletic training, found the college booths useful, and attended the panels to learn more about GAP, and how to choose a college. Jeremiah said, “this was my first Life After High School, and it was fun, [going] to the workshops, getting information. I’m just starting the college search. The event’s a good experience.”

Jennifer, grade 10 and also a first-time attendee, knew she was interested in a degree in music. Holding a swag bag with brochures and material from booths, she commented that “it’s good, learning about the presenters, what majors they have, and what scholarships they have to offer.”

Many parents, guardians, and siblings also attended. They were seen at the panels and booths as well, learning about possible next steps for their scholars, and what it means for all of them.

“The most exciting part of this event has been seeing scholars envision a path forward for the future. I watched so many young people interact with professionals and investigate college and career options,” shared Superintendent Dr. Dani Pfeiffer. “I know that with consistent exposure to different pathways, by graduation, our scholars can have a plan in place and the know-how to achieve their college and career goals.”

Life After High School is in direct support of the FWPS district strategic plan Goal 5, Persistence to Graduation: High School Graduation through Successful Transitions. The goal states that every scholar will successfully navigate the critical transitions in their schooling, and will graduate from high school ready for college, career, and postsecondary experiences.
