From Nerves to Neurons: Life Science at Federal Way Public Academy
Mr. Genzlinger teaches 6th grade life sciences class

At Federal Way Public Academy, scholars in Mr. Genzlinger’s sixth-grade Life Science class are learning about the systems that make up the human body. From the nervous system to the skeletal system—and the nine other body systems—students explore how the body works as a whole. Assigned to small assignment groups, scholars research individual systems and prepare reports that they will later present to the class.

On this day, Mr. Genzlinger focuses on the nervous system. Standing at the front of the classroom, he explains how nerves extend throughout the body and emphasizes the system’s role in sending information from different parts of the body back to the brain. He demonstrates how the nervous system connects to the brain, answers questions about its functions, and breaks down its different layers to show how it carries out complex tasks. Meanwhile students are listening in, writing down notes and making connections to early lessons.

“The nervous system is fascinating,” says FWPA scholar Nai, “because we’re learning about the brain, the eyes, and all the nerves in our body and what they do—like what happens when we touch something hot and how our body reacts. The body systems are important to learn about because we need to understand the processes, like how our body uses food and the roles different organs play.”

Mr. Genzlinger’s class helps scholars understand the human body through a scientific lens. Students learn how to think like scientists by analyzing data and understanding how systems like the nervous system function in everyday life. The course also serves as a strong foundation for future biology classes as students move up in grade levels.

By building curiosity, confidence, and critical-thinking skills, the class will be a memorable class at FWPA and demonstrates Federal Way Public Schools’ commitment to excellence and preparing students for continued success in science and beyond.
