Empowering Scholars: Saturday Scholar Community Celebrates Another Successful Year

Federal Way Public Schools concluded its third year of the Saturday Scholar Community (SSC) program on March 2, 2024, with an exciting movie field trip, marking yet another milestone in the journey of academic empowerment. Over 250 scholars enthusiastically participated in this enriching program.

SSC provided 5th and 8th grade scholars with a comprehensive experience, blending academic support, AVID learning strategies, and a vibrant selection of extracurricular activities ranging from Sphero and Hip-Hop Dance to Coding Classes and Theater Arts. Every scholar was immersed in an academic block covering Advisory, English Language Arts, and Math, setting the stage for their smooth transition into middle and high school.

5th grade scholar, Jaxson shared, "I liked [SSC] because it teaches me how to get on time to classes and meet new students that might go to a school that I will go to, and this community is a great thing to help me get ready for the next step of my journey.” Jaxson expressed that he feels more confident now in transitioning to middle school next year and thanked the teachers at SSC for all their help.

Anali Weatherhead, Executive Director of Recovery, Innovation, and Scholar Success, emphasized the program's pivotal role in easing scholars' transition phases, offering them opportunities to explore, engage, and excel. Reflecting on their experiences, scholars expressed their appreciation for the chance to try new activities and expand their horizons, all while forging lasting friendships within the SSC community.

SSC Principal Babbin shared “Saturday School is an amazing opportunity for our 5th and 8th graders. It’s wonderful to see the growth in our scholars over the 8-week period. They learn important skills about transitioning to another program, independence, and self-advocacy. Our scholars have the opportunity to meet new friends which expands their community which is very exciting.”

As the SSC journey concludes, the excitement continues as we are proud to announce our Summer Learning 2024 with multiple in-person academic camps.
