2023 Federal Way Mirror Athletes of the Year Announced
Federal Way Mirror Awards 2023 Athletes of the Year

Federal Way Public Schools (FWPS) and the Federal Way Mirror teamed up at the Athlete of the Year Celebration to honor 16 scholar-athletes for their athleticism and hard work throughout the school year and name the top-voted male and female athlete as the 2023 Athlete of the Year. The program, held at Federal Way High School, included remarks from FWPS Athletic Director Jerry Peterson and FWPS Superintendent Dr. Dani Pfeiffer, a presentation of awards, and entertaining performances showcasing each high school’s unique school culture and pride.

Two male and two female student-athletes from each comprehensive high school were recognized individually with a custom-framed sports card and a reading of their sports and academic accolades. Decatur’s jazz band provided a fantastic couple of jazzy musical arrangements, Federal Way High School’s cheer team performed lively routines, Thomas Jefferson High School brought their lively drum line, and Todd Beamer’s Pacific Islander Club performed an energetic set of dances.

The highlighted athletes came from all sports – track and field, wrestling, fastpitch, basketball, and others. From each of the high schools, the nominated athletes were:

Decatur High School 2023 Athletes of the Year
 Decatur High School: Sina Fuiava (fastpitch); Jewel Young (girls basketball); Jack Bergstrom (baseball); Nehemiah Washington (football, wrestling, track and field)

 

FWHS 2023 Athletes of the Year
Federal Way High School: Cassandra Atkins (track and field); Meeghan Meagher (soccer, basketball, fastpitch); Andre Jordan Jr. (football, track and field); Isaiah Afework (basketball and baseball) 
 
 
TJHS 2023 Athletes of the Year
Thomas Jefferson High School: Lyla Yesiltepe (golf); Mia Morgan (tennis); Cameron Carrerras (football, wrestling, track and field); Nicolas Nava Roman (cross country, track and field)
 
TBHS 2023 Athletes of the Year
Todd Beamer High School: Aissata Bangoura (volleyball, wrestling, track and field); Candance Nhye (soccer, basketball, track and field); Muhanad (Mumu) Basmeh (basketball); Sekou Bangoura (football, wrestling, track and field) 
 
After acknowledging each athlete’s accomplishment, Federal Way Mirror sports reporter Ben Ray came up to announce the 2023 Athlete of the Year Award, decided by a popular vote through the Federal Way Mirror website. As a graduate of Decatur High School, he shared the enthusiasm and anticipation with the rest of the attendees, and ultimately awarded Federal Way High School senior Isaiah Afework and Decatur sophomore Sina Fuiava as the 2023 male and female Athlete of the Year!

“I want to congratulate each and every one of our nominees for their tremendous achievements,” shared Dr. Pfeiffer. “Your hard work and dedication have not gone unnoticed, and you should be incredibly proud of all that you have accomplished. You are each an inspiration to all of us, and I have no doubt that you will continue to achieve great things in the future.”

FWPS is proud to provide all scholars with the opportunity to participate in sports and to see so many star performing athletes. Thank you to Federal Way Mirror for your support, and to FWPS athletic staff who helped make this event possible, and to the scholar-athletes for being a peer model of sportsmanship and hard work. Finally, congratulations Isaiah and Sina for being named 2023 Athlete of the Year!
