Nautilus Art Docent Awarded Washington Distinguished Service Award

The Washington Art Education Association awarded the 2015 “Washington Distinguished Service Award” to Andrea Schweikl of Nautilus Elementary for her work as a volunteer art docent in the schools.

This award recognizes outstanding achievement and contributions by persons or organizations inside or outside the field of art education.

Andrea visits all classroom, K-8, each month with the Art Cart, organizes two art walks and serves as the school’s Reflections Committee chair.

TJHS Teacher Awarded Secondary Level Educator of the Year

The Washington Art Education Association awarded the 2015 “Secondary Level Educator of the Year” to Ed Crossan of Thomas Jefferson High School.

This National Board Certified Art Teacher works tirelessly to create meaningful art learning experiences for his students. In addition to his teaching work, Ed promotes community involvement through both his classes and a number of afterschool clubs.

Decatur High School Celebrates 53 AP Scholars and one National AP Scholar

The AP Program offers Scholar Awards to recognize high school students who demonstrate college-level achievement through AP courses and exams.  Decatur High School has a total of 53 AP Scholars being recognized for their performance on the Spring 2015 AP exams.

Of these 53 students, eleven were recognized as AP Scholars with Distinction, meaning they scored at least 3.5 on all AP exams, AND had scores of 3 or higher on five or more exams.

Decatur has one National AP Scholar, Anastasia Kharitonova. As a National AP Scholar, Anastasia scored at least a 4 on all of her AP exams, on at least eight or more exams. Anastasia now attends Seattle Pacific University.

Congratulations to Anastasia and all of Decatur’s AP Scholars for their effort and commitment to academic success.

Sequoyah Girls With Interest in Computer Science Visit Twitter Offices

A group of 16 girls from Sequoyah Middle School with an interest in Computer Science careers visited the Seattle Twitter office on Friday, October 16. The girls met with Twitter staff and members of the “Girls Who Code” organization for a day of talks and sessions on coding.

While at Twitter, the girls got an overview of the scale of Twitter, and participated in coding lessons based upon their skill level.

The trip was facilitated by Sequoyah teachers Melody Nordstrom and David Chernicoff. We appreciate your efforts to encourage girls to consider STEM career paths by providing real-world experiences.

FWPS Earns IPM Star Certification for Keeping Schools Pest Free and Safe

Federal Way Public Schools has earned an IPM Star Certification for exceeding a rigorous standard for integrated pest management. Our district is one of just four districts in the state that has achieved this level of certification.

Integrated pest management is a “common sense” approach to solving pest problems with minimal pesticide usage through prevention of pest-friendly conditions. This approach helps keep students healthy by keeping the environment free of pests and harmful chemicals.
