FWHS Senior Selected Youth of the Year

The Boys & Girls Club of Federal Way has selected the “2015 Youth of the Year.”

Club members who earn this title embody the values of leadership service; academic excellence; and healthy lifestyles. They exemplify the critical impact that Boys & Girls Clubs have on the lives of young people.

This year, Kenny Tyson, of Federal Way High School is the EX3 Ron Sandwith Teen Center’s Youth of the Year. He will participate in state competition, and if selected as the State Youth of the Year, would receive a $5,000 scholarship and advance to regional competition. 

As a student-scholar, Kenny’s determination and grit has enabled him to achieve success and continue to pursue his aspirations for life beyond high school.

Decatur Student Takes Second in National Contest

Decatur High School’s Michela Walker, a 10th grader, competed at the FFA state convention last spring, earning top honors in the talent competition.  She advanced to the National FFA convention in Louisville, Kentucky.

Walker, a vocal performer, was in the top three finalists at the National competition. She sang, “The Climb,” to a sold-out audience and was named 2nd place in the nation.

Thomas Jefferson Hosts Bilingual Workshops

Thomas Jefferson High School hosted ¡La Chispa!, a regional bilingual workshops for middle level students designed to teach leadership skills to Latino students. 

In this workshop, students build self-confidence, strengthen their cultural identity and increase their academic success. Student success is largely dependent on three factors: positive adult role models, involvement in school and community service. ¡La Chispa! offers students advancement in all three areas.  

We recognize Julie Cabanas, Spanish Teacher and Latin Student Union Advisor along with 13 student leaders that helped to organize and promote the event.

Psychologist Awarded State Best Practices Award

Anton Furman, Ph.D., was awarded Washington State Association of School Psychologists “Best Practices Award for Assessment” at the State conference.

This is the 7th year in a row a FWPS psychologist has won an award at this conference. Chris Willis, Director of Student Support Services describes Anton as an invaluable asset to our district and the school psychology profession.
