Mu Alpha Theta National Convention: Thomas Jefferson High School places 7th in the Nation

Thomas Jefferson’s Math Team worked hard all year to compete at a nationwide competition during the summer. Students gave up their time to practice and prepare for nationals. With the help of sponsors, parents, students and the TJHS math team coach, Tom Norris, the TJHS math team successfully competed against the top schools from all over the United States.

HQ Air Force JROTC select cadets from Todd Beamer for the Silver Star Community Service with Excellence Award

The Silver Star Community Service with Excellence Award is one of the highest awards that an AFJROTC unit can receive and goes to only the 45 AFJROTC units (out of 879) with the highest average of community service hours.  TBHS cadets completed over 4,000 hours of community service last year and had one of the highest community service hour averages in the nation.

Federal Way Native Student Attends First-Ever Youth Gathering at White House

Federal Way High School junior Aiyana Dawson made history this summer. She was one of only five non-tribally sponsored teenagers from Western Washington to attend the White House Tribal Youth Gathering in Washington D.C., the first government-sponsored gathering of Native American teenagers from throughout the United States, early in July. Aiyana’s journey to the White House began last year, when President Obama launched the Generation Indigenous (Gen-I) initiative.

Aiyana and other native teenagers from twenty Western Washington school districts were already involved in an ambitious collaboration to create a leadership program for Native American high school-aged youth. The program, supported by the Western Washington Native American Education Consortium (WWNAEC), launched this past school year and Aiyana was one of the students selected to be in the inaugural class. She, along with teenagers from urban areas across the region, dedicated herself to developing her leadership skills and building cultural awareness and connections over the course of a full school year.

Federal Way middle school track athlete qualifies for Junior Olympic Championships

Anthony “AJ” Frazier, a Lakota Middle School student, was the fastest recorded seventh grader in the nation this past track season at the 100-meter event. He ran a time of 11.48 during the Federal Way Middle School district finals on June 11.

At the Junior Olympic Region Championships at Jesuit High School in Oregon on July 10-12, he finished in the top five of the 100. This earned him a spot in the USA Track and Field Junior Olympic Championships at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville from July 27 through Aug. 2.
