Our Program
As a partner of the Washington Service Corps, Federal Way Public Schools AmeriCorps has served the Federal Way community since 1995. FWPS AmeriCorps members serve middle and high school students by supporting their journey to become college and career ready through their assigned school's AVID program.
Members serve in:
- AVID elective classrooms
- Core-subject classrooms
- After-school programming
- Occasionally, members perform service projects that focus on the environmental and humanitarian vitality of the Federal Way community
Member Experience
Member Experience
FWPS AmeriCorps members make a difference in the lives of young people by serving in AVID elective classrooms, core-subject classrooms (Math, Science, English, & History), and after-school programming. AVID is a college and career readiness system that equips scholars with the skills to succeed. AVID is the primary focus of our program. AmeriCorps members facilitate small study groups called tutorials in the elective. Members will guide a group of seven students through a 10-step process to support their academic achievement, learning, and much more. Core-subject classroom support takes our provided services up a notch. By being in the classroom supporting the learning environment, members are able to provide one-on-one or small-group tutoring. Each member serves in a team dynamic as they are assigned to one middle school or high school location.
Members receive ongoing training and professional development to reinforce best practices in the field of education in an inclusive environment designed to foster their professional development, practice, and leadership skills.
