Focused on Learning

Dear Federal Way Public Schools Parents and Community,

I want you to know how much I appreciate the support and resiliency of the Federal Way Public Schools community as we kicked off this school year!

Our staff have been engaged in professional learning focused on the use of technology to personalize our learning environments while building personal connections with our scholars. We recently convened principals to check in and see how remote learning is going at each of our schools, and I couldn’t be prouder of the work that is happening to support our students. We know that face-to-face instruction is best, but our team is facing the challenge of remote learning head-on by providing students the instruction they need.

We are continually getting feedback from scholars and staff on what is working well and areas we can improve. Families have commented on how consistent our technology tools are between schools, the high levels of support our teachers are providing, and the ongoing communication we’ve provided to ensure families have the information they need to support their children at home. We are so proud of our scholars for adapting to this new way of virtual learning—their determination and commitment to education is evident.

Safely returning to in-person schooling is on everyone’s mind. At the time of writing this letter, we continue to see high rates of COVID-19 in Federal Way. Our ability to return to some form of in-person instruction will depend on all of us doing our part to help prevent
the spread of COVID-19 in our community. Let’s follow the recommended guidelines and keep socially distant, wash hands regularly, and wear a face covering.

We’ll continue to monitor the rates in hopes that we can drop below the threshold of 75 per 100,000 for the required duration, as required by the Department of Health and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. We’ll remain in remote learning status through December 2020 and will reassess in January 2021.

At FWPS, we’ll continue to focus on providing the best learning experience possible for our scholars. Someday this pandemic will be behind us, but in the meantime, let’s each do our part to keep our community safe.

In partnership,

Tammy Campbell
