FWPS launches STEM with the Superintendent
The new event series aims to help PK-12 scholars explore STEM and scholars can sign-up to participate.
Federal Way, Wash. — Federal Way Public Schools (FWPS) recently announced a new STEM initiative, STEM with the Superintendent, which aims to encourage STEM curiosity and exploration among K 12 FWPS scholars. The series is part of an expanded STEM approach and the district's five-year STEM plan to expose more scholars to STEM learning opportunities.
Superintendent Dr. Pfeiffer will invite scholar participants to engage in STEM learning activities. Each lesson will incorporate a STEM initiative, learning standard, Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway, and often the help of a STEM industry partner. Then, STEM with the Superintendent activities will be made available to scholars in school and online through videos. Accompanying lesson materials and resources will either be provided at school or can be sourced from low-cost everyday supplies at home.
"It was important that we designed a STEM learning experience available to all PK-12 scholars and families in our district. Offering in-person STEM lessons, then showcasing these activities through videos featuring peers of scholars helps them to connect and builds excitement," shared Dr. Pfeiffer. "As a former science teacher, I want each student to know STEM principles can be found in every area of life. I hope to encourage scholars to stay curious and engaged in STEM - there are so many STEM jobs in our region, and it is our job to expose them to the world of STEM early so they can take advantage of all the opportunities in STEM that lie ahead."
The first STEM with the Superintendent event is anticipated in January 2023, and scholars are encouraged to sign up for the chance to participate. The video recap will then be published on the FWPS YouTube channel, FWPS website, and FWPS social media channels after the events.
