District Headlines & Features
Welcome to Sunnycrest
Sunnycrest is a K-5 school serving nearly 600 scholars from all around the world. We speak over 25 languages, but we all understand that everyone deserves a voice, a dream, a bright future. While we have many traditional classrooms, we also house the district’s only Spanish English Dual Language program. Sunnycrest has been open since 1965, but our current campus opened in 2012. You are welcome here.
Our academic program balances rigorous on-grade level instruction, with differentiated small group and individual instruction. Every 14 days your child will conference with his or her teacher to set power goals for reading mastery. As scholars meet their goals, they will “level-up” in reading. This program is called IRLA.
We also use Ready mathematics. Ready math teaches scholars to apply mathematics to real world situations and encourages students to find different ways to solve problems and share their mathematical thinking. In addition to core instruction, scholars complete individualized computer-based lessons through the online adaptive portion of the program called “iReady.” iReady uses diagnostic tests to place scholars on a path towards mastery and acceleration. iReady “my path” lessons can be done both at school and at home.
Making sure that we are preparing our scholars for college and career by while meeting their individual needs as learners is not an easy task. Which is why we believe in collaborative work. It takes a village!
We have several support teachers on staff who partner with classroom teachers to provide instruction. These include our Instructional Coach, Literacy Development teacher, four ELL teachers, and two Interventionists. On “Early Release” days these teams come together to meet and discuss the best ways to support ALL scholars. You can find these dates on our district calendar.
Social Emotional Health
Your child’s ability to manage his or her emotions, solve problems, and develop social skills is also important to us. We use Second Step and Kelso’s Choices to teach the skills needed for emotional well-being. Our school counselor, family liaison, assistant principal, and dean work together to meet the needs of our scholars and their families.
We have a school mascot, the Roadrunner. Each week he helps us to celebrate scholars who are following our schoolwide expectations of being SAFE, KIND, and PRODUCTIVE. We give out special tickets called “feathers” to scholars and we have posted expectations around the building so everyone knows how to earn them.
Don’t take my word for it, here is what some of our scholars have to say about Sunnycrest…
“The roadrunners are really good kids and they have really good manners. There are so many good teachers in our school, I can’t even count them!” -Sole, grade 4
“It’s a very great school with really nice kids.” -Claire, grade 3
“It’s a fun school for kids, kindergarten all the way through 5th grade. They have great afterschool programs” -Ariel, grade 3
“It’s a good place to learn another language.” -Cynthia, grade 4
