STEM Exploration Night 2023

On Wednesday, April 12, 2023, Federal Way Public Schools (FWPS) hosted the sixth annual STEM Exploration Night, making the district-wide event since 2019. Over 1,000 PreK-12th grade scholars and their families explored science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and learned about career opportunities that lead to high-demand careers in the region.

This year’s event, themed STEM for Everyone, helped scholars see how STEM is integrated into their interests, hobbies, and career goals. Scholars were able to visit over 100 industry partner and scholar booths featuring STEM-related career information, activities, and school programs and projects. Interactive demonstrations were also plentiful this year – scholars enjoyed elementary and high school robotics showcases, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) experiences, and an earthquake simulation to name a few. The annual STEM Film Festival also returned in person this year. Scholars and family alike poured into the theater to view scholar-produced films and celebrate this year’s winners.

Added this year was the debut of STEM with the Superintendent, providing scholars a first chance to engage in a STEM activity led by Superintendent Dr. Dani Pfeiffer. Scholars acted as civil engineers and worked to build the tallest tower from provided materials. Winners of the STEM challenge were announced during the event and are also being recognized in the weekly district newsletter and on social media.

Other event attractions included coding workshops, a Minecraft experience room, a traveling museum of historical STEM artifacts, and panel discussions including Multilingual Voices in STEM, STEM for All Abilities, and IGNITE Women in STEM featuring FWPS alumnae.

STEM Exploration Night supplements school-based learning and provides an access point for all scholars to learn about the many careers and opportunities within STEM. Through the event, scholars can explore, prepare, and launch into STEM pathways which can lead to high-demand, lucrative careers.

FWPS is committed to helping each scholar successfully navigate the critical transitions in their schooling in order to graduate from high school ready for college, career, and postsecondary experiences (Goal 5). The district is continually building capacity to implement new ways for scholars to engage in STEM through new partnerships, programs, and improved curriculum.
