Star Lake Paint Night is a Picture of a Good Time!

Star Lake Paint Night is a Picture of a Good Time!

Supplied with canvas, paint, an instructor, and the support of teachers and the school’s parent teacher association (PTA), Star Lake Elementary hosted their first-ever paint night for an evening of art instruction, fun learning, and coming together as a school community.

Set up in the Star Lake common space, rows of school lunch tables were converted into painting stations for the evening’s participants. Each station had its own supplies for the activity – a canvas atop an easel, paints, paintbrushes, and a palette – but everyone applied their own creativity to make their individual art piece! Led by an instructor situated on the stage, they provided directions to create an autumn scene of a tree with falling yellow, golden, and brown leaves illuminated by a full moon overhead. Some scholars followed the instructor closely, stroke for stroke, to create the scene, and others used the direction as a loose guideline to make the canvas their own expression.

Whatever method they chose, they were supported and encouraged. As the painting progressed, painters – scholars and parents alike – would raise their hand for the teacher to come along and supply the paint for the next step.

While Family Liaison Jessica Hilderbrand took a moment between supplying paint, she explained how paint night came about. “We had an exit survey at [last year’s] events, and one we saw come up several times was a family paint night. It seemed like a really great thing to do and then tie it into the fall.”

Whether it was trying their hand at painting or enjoying the community around them, Star Lake Elementary scholars and families had a fantastic time. The night’s activity aligns with the district’s strategic plan Goal 2, Thriving Confident, Responsible Individuals and Goal 3, Engaged, Empowered Critical Thinkers. Providing extracurricular experiences for all families to participate in creates an environment for scholars to grow, succeed, and be positive productive community members.
