Nine Consecutive Years: FWPS School Board Earns Prestigious Board of Distinction Recognition
District among record 37 recipients this year
Federal Way Public Schools (FWPS) Board of Directors has once again achieved the Washington State School Directors’ Association (WSSDA) Board of Distinction status, marking the ninth consecutive year of this prestigious recognition. This year, FWPS joins 36 other school boards across Washington State in receiving this honor, out of 295 eligible districts.
The FWPS Board was commended for demonstrating exceptional leadership, especially in prioritizing student success through strategic initiatives and accountability measures. This accolade acknowledges the board’s unwavering commitment to equity and its continued focus on closing opportunity gaps, ensuring that all 21,000+ scholars within the district have a pathway to success.
“On behalf of Federal Way Public Schools, we are incredibly grateful to our Board of Directors for their steadfast dedication to fostering environments that support the academic, social, and emotional growth of every scholar,” said Superintendent Dr. Dani Pfeiffer. “Their commitment, alongside our incredible staff, propels our work forward, helping scholars to thrive today and in their futures.”
Rigorous Standards in Board Leadership and Student Outcomes
Receiving the Board of Distinction title requires a comprehensive application that reflects the board’s initiatives in key areas, including professional development, equitable opportunity access, and high expectations for student learning outcomes. FWPS’s submission emphasized impactful actions in:
- Professional Development: Initiatives to elevate district success through continuous board member learning.
- Opportunity Gap Reduction: Implementing Multi-Tiered Systems of Support to bolster academic, behavioral, and social-emotional achievements.
- High Expectations for Learning: Setting ambitious goals, reflected through strategic district plans and diverse program expansions.
Among the noted outcomes were:
- Endorsed MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) to meet scholars' needs in academic acceleration, attendance, and SEL (Social Emotional Learning).
- Implemented small group instruction across content areas to enhance student engagement and mastery of standards.
- Adopted a new SEL curriculum and promoted student wellness through programs like Mentor & Me, Saturday Scholar Community, and Summer School, focusing on acceleration, enrichment, and mental health support.
- Co-developed curriculum units with the Puyallup Tribe to support Native scholars' sense of belonging.
The FWPS Board of Directors will be honored along with other Boards of Distinction at the upcoming WSSDA Annual Conference.
