Celebrating Chuseok at Olympic View K-8: Language, Culture, and Belonging

At Federal Way Public Schools, our Dual Language Programs go beyond language instruction. They provide students with opportunities to experience different cultures, celebrate diverse traditions, and develop a strong sense of belonging. Through these experiences, students learn to appreciate their own identities while building understanding and respect for others.

One example of this commitment took place on Sept. 24, 2026, at Olympic View K-8, where students and staff celebrated Chuseok, also known as Korean Thanksgiving. Chuseok is one of Korea's most important cultural holidays, centered on gratitude, family, and tradition.

The celebration brought the school community together through a variety of performances that highlighted both traditional and modern aspects of Korean culture. Students enjoyed presentations featuring Jindo Bukchum (traditional drum dance), Taepyeongmu (a traditional Korean dance), K-Pop, and martial arts demonstrations such as Tae Kwon Do. The performances offered students an engaging opportunity to learn about Korean customs and traditions while celebrating the rich cultural diversity within their school community.

The event was supported by members of the America K-Pop Association (AKA), one of the amazing performers of the event, who shared their enthusiasm for cultural representation and inclusion.

“It’s really good to just spread diversity… It’s really amazing that we get to help them celebrate!” said Caleb, a former Green Gables Elementary student and member of AKA.

Ashley, also a member of AKA, reflected on the impact of cultural representation in schools.

“It’s important, whether you’re Korean, to see yourself represented, and it’s important for other kids to see other cultures.”

These celebrations play an important role in creating welcoming school environments where every student feels seen, valued, and connected. By recognizing and honoring different cultural traditions, schools help strengthen students' sense of belonging while fostering curiosity, understanding, and respect among peers.

Federal Way Public Schools proudly offers Dual Language Programs at Sunnycrest Elementary, Olympic View K-8, Evergreen Middle School, and Thomas Jefferson High School. These programs empower scholars, families, staff, and the community to view cultural backgrounds and languages as valuable assets while developing confident, critical thinkers prepared for a diverse world.

Olympic View K-8 offers both English/Korean and English/Spanish Dual Language pathways, providing students with opportunities to become multilingual and culturally competent while building meaningful connections to the communities they serve.
