Green Ribbon Award

We are excited to announce that over the summer Lakota Middle School received a Green Ribbon Award in Washington D.C. from the U.S. Department of Education.

At the event, 47 schools and 15 districts were honored for their exemplary efforts to reduce environmental impact and costs, promote better health, and ensure effective environmental education.

We invite the teachers from Lakota, who led this effort, to come forward and be recognized:

  • Rasa Conklin
  • Laurie Sukola

During the 2011-2012 school year, a group of students voiced interest in creating a school within a school that advocated for environmental sustainability, a community garden, and stewardship.

The district incorporated this student vision into the Integrated Environmental Sustainability (IES) Academy. Students learn all core subjects — language arts, math, science, and social studies — by solving real-world problems through interdisciplinary, project-based sustainability learning with a service component. 

Among many efforts, the school’s 2015-2016 service- and place-based project involved using the engineering design process and plan to create a rain garden to reduce erosion caused by storm water and garden drainage.

Park 16 Back to School—Breakfast on the GO

We would like to thank other community partners for their work to help send-off our scholars at Park 16 Apartments back to school! We Love Our City, a team of several local churches, partnered with multiple other organizations we would like to recognize today.

When I call your name, please join us at the front:

While waiting for the bus, our young scholars were greeted and given juice, muffins, bananas, granola bars, chapstick, stickers, smiles and high fives. They also had the opportunity to take a photo taken with McGruff the Crime Dog.

Parents taking their children to school were given treats as they drove by, and Starbucks cards and snacks were given to the bus drivers.

Four large boxes of leftover snacks were taken to four nearby schools for the staffs and students to enjoy.

A huge thanks to all who collaborated to make the Back to School–Breakfast on the GO a very fun and positive morning for students as they kicked off a new school year!

Business Leaders of America

Today we’d like to invite Federal Way High School junior

Simon Struthers up to be recognized for placing fifth in the nation in the Desktop Programming Applications event at the Future Business Leaders of America’s summer National Leadership Conference in Atlanta.

This was Simon’s first time competing in the event. At state, he placed second in this same category, and fourth in Word Processing.

Simon is the incoming Future Business Leaders of America chapter president.

His chapter goals for this year are, “to boost membership numbers and have a minimum of five student scholars compete at the state level.”

We look forward to hearing about his future business successes. Congratulations, Simon!
