Community partners support scholars at Park 16 Apartments with Back to School Breakfast

We would like to thank several community partners for hosting a back to school breakfast for student-scholars at Park 16 Apartments on the first day of school! A team of community organizations, businesses, local churches and others partnered with Park 16 to make this event happen. This is in support of strategic plan Goal 2 The Whole Child: Thriving, Confident, Responsible Individuals.

While waiting for the bus our young scholars were greeted and provided breakfast, smiles and high fives. They could also take a first day of school photo with their grade numbers. A huge thanks to all who collaborated to make the Back to School-Breakfast on the GO a very fun and positive morning for students as they kicked off a new school year!

Decatur scholar-athlete youngest member to make USA Inline Speed Skating Team

We would like to recognize a Decatur scholar-athlete who was the youngest person to make the USA inline speed skating team and recently competed in the world championships in Nanjing, China, Sept. 3-10.

At the world compeition, Adrion Workman  Adrion skated the 1,000-meter race on the track, running the sixteenth fastest time in the heats. He placed twenty-ninth for junior men in the marathon out of the 83 junior men that skated.

We are proud of Adrion for not only his athletic pursuits, but also his focus on academics. This is in alignment with the district strategic plan Goal 3 for all scholars to be engaged, empowered critical thinkers.

Mirror Lake Elementary Back to School Bash a huge success

The Mirror Lake Elementary Back to School Bash led by St. Luke’s Lutheran Church was a big success! St. Luke’s provided backpacks, food, school supplies and haircuts. This is in alignment with the district strategic plan Goal 2 The Whole Child: Thriving, Confident Responsible Individuals.

We would like to recognize the following individuals from St. Luke’s and Mirror Lake Elementary for their support:

  • Principal Stephanie McPhail, Mirror Lake Elementary
  • All volunteers who participated

An estimated 250 families attended the event and were supported with over 300 bags of supplies. This could not have been done without the work of community volunteers and Mirror Lake staff.

This is a great example of what can happen when schools and community groups work together to make good things happen for kids.
