We’re proud of the 91 elementary mathematicians who participated in the exciting annual Battle of the Math Brains competition! Third through fifth graders from five schools across our district engaged in various math challenges, including individual tests and team activities that involved moving around the room.
Congratulations to 5 of our scholars from all four of our comprehensive high schools for advancing to the WIAA State Boys Swimming and Diving Championships!
In addition, Federal Way High School recorded the most points scored at a state championship since 2014.
Congratulations to 10 of our scholars from all four of our comprehensive high schools for their success and advancing to the WIAA Boys Wrestling Mat Classic State Championships!
In addition, 6 of our scholars reached the podium with Decatur High School scholar, Nehemiah Washington placing 3rd in the 4A 215-pound weight class and Todd Beamer High School scholar, Sekou Bangoura placing 2nd in the 3A 190-pound weight class!

In addition, scholars Jaelyn-Rae Quintanilla from Decatur High School and Aissata Bangoura from Todd Beamer High School won the Washington State Coaches Association Wrestling Academic State Champion for their respective weight classes!
The WIAA Scholastic Awards program recognizes team grade point average, and the Washington State Coaches Association recognizes student athletes with the highest-grade point average among all Washington high schools in their enrollment classification and weight class.
Congratulations to Sam Hunt, Decatur High School’s head girls wrestling coach, for being selected by the Washington State Coaches Association as the 2023-24 Girls Wrestling Coach of the Year!
Sam has coached wrestling in Federal Way Public Schools for 25 years. This includes 6 as head coach and 1 year as assistant coach at Saghalie, 7 years as the boys assistant coach and the last 11 years as the Head Girls Wrestling coach at Decatur High School. His colleagues appreciate his coordination of NPSL Girls Wrestling regular and post season events. Sam has been an integral part of the growth of girls wrestling in the Puget Sound region.
Sam was presented with his award at the 2023-24 WIAA Wrestling Mat Classic State Championships on Saturday, February 17 at the Tacoma Dome.
Nautilus K-8 and Kilo Middle School recently celebrated an exciting achievement. In February, 109 scholars from Nautilus K-8 and 172 scholars from Kilo Middle School had perfect attendance! These scholars were in class, on time, every day, ready to learn.
Attendance is celebrated at Nautilus K-8 with each scholar receiving a personal certificate for each month they achieve 90% attendance. Over at Kilo Middle School, scholars participate in monthly attendance challenges. Each student who meets the monthly challenge receives a prize!
