Good News April 23

We would like to recognize 10 of our Woodmont K-8 scholars for their service in the Woodmont K-8 Library Helper program and for helping the library run smoothly all year long.

Woodmont K-8 believes in empowering scholars to be leaders and help their community. The Library Helper program is a yearlong commitment where scholars come in before school and during first and second recesses, to help with library tasks such as shelving books, making displays for scholars use, delivering library carts, and so much more.

To join the program, scholars must maintain positive behavior, follow the school-wide expectations, and maintain excellent classwork. As a result, these scholars are growing, thriving, and developing leadership and speaking skills in the process.

Congratulations to our Federal Way Public Schools scholars who took home the top prizes for their films in the 6th Annual STEM Film Festival: From Imagination to Innovation.

These scholars showcased the captivating journey from imagination to innovation within the realm of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in their short films! 20 remarkable films were submitted across three categories: Animation, Live Action, and Documentary.

The short films were evaluated on thematic resonance, artistic layout and design, technical elements, and thorough sourcing. Congratulations to the elementary and secondary scholar teams that won in each category! 

Congratulations to our scholars from Decatur, Federal Way, and Thomas Jefferson high schools for placing in the WIAA Washington State Speech Championships 2024.

Scholars from over 60 schools from across the state competed in 8 divisional event categories.

Congratulations to the Federal Way High School’s Air Force Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (AFJROTC) Color Guard Team II for their success and advancing to the Northwest Drill and Rifle Conference Championships in Oregon City.

Twenty-five schools across Washington and Oregon competed in events such as fitness, military drill teams, color guard, air rifle, and academic.

Our scholars placed 3rd in their division conference to advance to the championships.

Congratulations to four of our Federal Way Public Schools scholars for their scholarship awards to continue their education in college. 

Todd Beamer High School scholars, Angelita Espinoza, Amy Guzman, and Angel Lara-Marquez were each awarded the Northwest Career Colleges Federation Careers That Work Scholarship! High school counselors work with scholars to identify their career pathways and nominate qualifying scholars for this impressive award that’s designed to open doors for students entering exciting fields such as allied health, mechanical trades, cosmetology, and more.

Each scholar receives a $1,000 tuition scholarship to attend partner career colleges across the Pacific Northwest to pursue post-secondary education geared towards the career of their choice.  

Decatur High School scholar, Grace Thykkuttathil, was awarded the Pacific Lutheran University Harstad Founder’s Scholarship! To qualify for this academic scholarship, students must first be selected as a PLU President’s Scholarship recipient, which is awarded to students who demonstrate significant leadership and service and have a 3.8 cumulative GPA.

Of the 120 scholars who are identified as PLU Presidential Scholars, only 10 Harstad Founder’s Scholars were selected after a competitive faculty interview process. Grace will receive $40,000 per year for four years of undergraduate study. 

We would like to congratulate Kelly Sutton, Principal of Silver Lake Elementary School, for being awarded the Alpha Community Education Initiative’s (ACEI) Teacher/Administrator/Educational Advocate of the Year Award!

This award recognizes the achievements of educators to challenge, motivate, and inspire their students to do their best, and are respected by their peers, families, and students. Kelly was awarded $1,000 for her advocacy in school equity and service in education with excellence, honor, and integrity.
