National Reading Month 2023
About
-
March kicks off National Reading Month, which celebrates the privilege of literacy and encourages readers, young and old, to engage in reading. We're celebrating all month-long through social media posts featuring readers across our district, a scholar-recommended booklist, and other highlights!
Federal Way Public Schools is committed to helping scholars develop strong reading skills, starting in elementary through high school graduation. Not only does reading serve as a healthy exercise for our minds by improving creativity, critical thinking skills, and concentration, but it also helps expand our perspective on others and the world around us. It can help us connect with others, deepen empathy, and so much more!
Did you know? Daily reading can improve comprehension skills and academic performance across all subjects.(1)
That's why FWPS has built-in ELA learning targets into our strategic plan to support literacy and reading development at every stage of student learning as noted in Goal 1 and Goal 4 of our strategic plan. With support, scholars will meet or exceed grade-level standards.
Celebrate Reading

Submit a Reading Photo
We want to see our scholars reading! Post or send us reading photos to socialmedia@fwps.org so we can celebrate our scholars in action on our social media channels.
Scholar Recommended Booklist
We're excited to share our first booklist, featuring favorite books nominated by PreK-12 grade scholars across our district. Books include a wide range of genres and interests, and include themes dealing with cultural identity, feelings, and more! View the video and booklist at: www.fwps.org/ScholarBooklist
Social Media
Are you following us on social media, yet? Be sure to find us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for exciting National Reading Month posts and other news.
Video: Watch Students Prepare for Battle!
FWPS fourth and fifth-grade scholars are preparing for battle...Battle of the Books, that is!
Scholars are excited to participate in this annual competition which tests reading comprehension and recollection of key information from a selection of books. Scholars have already formed teams at their respective schools and will go head-to-head against other teams in the semi-final and final competitions in May. Hear from some Battle of the Books scholars share why they joined a team this year, and why reading is important. View the video at: www.fwps.org/BattleofTheBooks.
Participate in the Reading Marathon Challenge
Are you up for the challenge? Read for 7 days in a row during the month of March and track your progress in the Reading Marathon Challenge reading log. Once you've completed the challenge, trade your completed reading log for a prize! Learn more details at: www.fwps.org/ReadingMarathon.
Explore Your School’s Library
Uncover your next favorite story by browsing through your school’s physical or online library. If you need ideas or help, contact your school’s librarian. Also, remember all FWPS students have access to the King County Library System’s online resources and eBooks. The opportunities for reading are endless!
We look forward to celebrating National Reading Month with each of you as we highlight all the reading activities and events happening across the district! Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram so you don’t miss a thing.
