Hello Totem Families and Friends,
Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! The Totem Middle School team is excited to welcome our scholars back. This past spring and summer we have engaged in focused, meaningful learning to support our scholars and their families in ways that align to the Federal Way Public Schools strategic plan. Our work is most effective when we proactively partner with the families we serve in authentic ways. The relationships we build with each scholar’s home is a partnership that we know is essential to supporting your child academically, socially, and emotionally. We look forward to partnering with you in the following ways:
Listening and Learning to Improve our Practice. Attend Coffee with the Principal to meet Totem administrators and share your feedback on how we can serve your family best. Fall Dates: Sept 21st, Oct 19th, Nov 16th
Come play with us! Positive experiences at school relate to positive experiences in the classroom. We will be hosting three family nights (October 23: Multicultural Night, Janary 29: College Career Nights, April 4: STEAM Night) and we will provide bussing so all members of your family can attend. Please come have fun with us!
Encourage your T-Bird to attend school every day. If scholars are not at school then they are missing important information that will not allow them to be as successful as we know they can be! Please contact our school for additional supports and resources.
Attend Scholar-Led Conferences. It is important that scholars know they have a team of adults behind them. Please find a time in our flexible scheduling that works best for your family! Fall SLCs are November 8th and 9th.
Please call, send a note (any language), or come to Totem to help us better understand how we can support your scholar. You know your child best. We want to know how we can best support them. Language services are available.
I look forward to seeing you at Totem and learning how we can continue to partner together!
At Totem, we are proud that our student body represents over 70 first languages. “Tot Wederom” is a sincere way to say “See you again soon” in the Afrikaans language.
Goal 2 -The Whole Child: Thriving, Confident, Responsible Individuals
Goal 4 -Content Area Competency: Mastery of All Subjects
Every student scholar will be empowered and prepared to develop personal responsibility in order to be positive, productive members of society
Every student scholar will receive equitable opportunity for success, and will meet or exceed standards of performance in all subjects by the end of each grade
Talk to your scholar about their school day. It is typical for adolescent students to say things are just “fine” and provide little detail. Continue asking them how things are going. Ask them to give you a “glow” and “grow” every day.
Ask your scholar to lead the family through a Restorative Circle, a common practice here at Totem Middle School. They will be excited to teach the family continued ways to communicate.
Scholars benefit greatly when family members are visible and engaged at school. Consider being present in the classroom, visiting during lunches, chaperoning a field trip, joining PTA, and/or attending evening functions.
Have your scholar read at least 20 minutes a day at home – in any language! English Language Arts (ELA) classes are 60 minutes plus an additional 30 minutes of reading high-interest books at their own Independent Reading Level. Research shows that when students read every day they significantly build a robust vocabulary and critical thinking skills.
Register with ParentVUE so that you can see live updated information on your scholar’s grades. When parents are informed, our partnership strengthens as we can proactively address concerns together. Please reach out if you need any assistance.
