Because of You Award

  • Scholars in grades 3–12 have a chance to nominate any Federal Way Public Schools staff member in the district they believe has positively influenced them, their school, and/or their community with the Because of You award.

    The Superintendent’s Scholar Advisory team reviews these nominations, and each month selects recipients to be recognized at a board meeting.

    After reviewing multiple nominations, the following staff members have been selected to receive the Because of You Award to recognize the incredible things they do for our scholars every day, and making a difference in our scholars' lives!

    We would like to recognize Dreya Bundesen, teacher at Mirror Lake Elementary.

    She was nominated by a scholar who shares Ms. Bundesen had a positive impact on her. The scholar also says Ms. Bundesen made her feel comfortable, encouraged her to smile, and helped make many good memories. Because of you, this scholar says she feels inspired to become a teacher one day!

    We would like to recognize Jonathan Scott, teacher at Lakota Middle School.

    Jonathan was nominated by a scholar who says he made class fun and exciting. The scholar says Mr. Scott always said, “good morning” and asked how his day was going, and he says this built respect for Mr. Scott. Because of you, this scholar says he learned to appreciate each day and enjoys going to class!

    We would like to recognize Phil Natsiopoulos, teacher at Sacajawea Middle School.

    The scholar who nominated him says Mr. Natsiopoulos helped him feel more confident and allowed him to help with class projects and more. He shares Mr. Natsiopoulos is funny and makes class a fun place to be. Because of you, this scholar says he is a better person!

    We would like to recognize Matt Vaeena, teacher at Decatur High School.

    Matt was nominated by a scholar who says Mr. Vaeena taught him a number of life skills that helped get him through life. The scholar shares the best thing he learned from Mr. Vaeena is that you can lose, or you can learn. Now this scholar says he no longer loses, but only learns. Because of you, this scholar says he has the confidence to tackle whatever comes his way in life!

    We would like to recognize Kurt Lauer, principal at Federal Way Public Academy.  

    He was nominated by a few scholars. One shares Mr. Lauer helped him have a unique and positive experience at school. Another scholar says Mr. Lauer always treats him with kindness and offers support. A third says Mr. Lauer created an amazing school environment and helped him strive to be a better person. Another scholar states Mr. Lauer helped him out when he needed instruction and helped figure out his next steps in education. Another says Mr. Lauer makes school feel like family, and he helped guide her on the best path. Because of you, these scholars say they enjoy school, learned a lot, and have grown through their experiences at Federal Way Public Academy!

    We would like to recognize Elizabeth Copeland, teacher at Thomas Jefferson High School.

    Elizabeth was nominated by a scholar who shares Ms. Copeland helped support him through the challenges of online biology class during this difficult year. He also states Ms. Copeland helped him overcome barriers that stood in the way of his success.  Because of you, this scholar says he enjoys online learning, feels confident in sharing his ideas aloud, and earned an A in biology!

    We would like to recognize Heather Gooch, teacher at Mark Twain Elementary.

     She was nominated by a couple scholars. One says Ms. Gooch is caring, funny, and knows how to explain things to help him understand and reach his goals. Another scholar shares Ms. Gooch is a funny, positive teacher who has helped her learn. Because of you, these scholars say learning is fun and they are always happy to go to class!

    We would like to recognize Robert Foster, teacher at Lakota Middle School.

    Robert was nominated by a couple scholars. One shares Mr. Foster always makes class fun, explains things well, and helps her understand. A second scholar says Mr. Foster made online school fun during a stressful time, and she feels understood. Because of You, these scholars say they are better at math and come to school in a good mood, ready to learn!

    She was nominated by a couple scholars. One scholar thanks Ms. Oliver for helping improve her leadership and time management skills. Another says she has given her encouragement and the determination to succeed.     We would like to recognize Joan Eilertson, teacher at Illahee Middle School.

    Joan was nominated by a couple scholars. One shares Ms. Eilertson provided support while she was struggling, and encouraged her to never give up. Another scholar says Ms. Eilertson listens to her questions and helps find solutions to her problems in remote learning. Because of you, these scholars say they enjoy PE class and feel comfortable in online school!

    We would like to recognize Joel Lindberg, teacher at Todd Beamer High School.

    He was nominated by a couple scholars. One states Mr. Lindberg is caring, trustworthy, and goes above and beyond in everything he does. Another scholar shares Mr. Lindberg is kind and will do anything to lift her spirits every day. Because of you, these scholars say they feel valued and feel better about themselves in school!

    We would like to recognize Sarah Stock, teacher at Wildwood Elementary.

    She was nominated by a scholar who says she helps her grow as a student and taught her the importance of education. She states Ms. Stock made learning fun and this made her want to go to school. Because of you, this scholar says she is working hard in her studies and learns more each day!

    We would like to recognize Amanda Staley, teacher at Sacajawea Middle School.

    She was nominated by a scholar who says Ms. Staley is supportive and challenges her to be the best she can be.     We would like to recognize Jen Allen, teacher at Mirror Lake Elementary.

    We would like to recognize Lana Maxey, re-engagement advisor at Internet Academy. 

    She was nominated by a scholar who says Ms. Maxey always had faith in her. She shares Ms. Maxey helped her finish school and get accepted into multiple colleges. Because of you, this scholar says she feels prepared in ways she never imagined!

    We would like to recognize Chris Leslie, band and orchestra director at Sequoyah Middle School.

     He was nominated by a few scholars. One scholar shares Mr. Leslie sets high expectations with great rewards. Another scholar says Mr. Leslie believes in him, and band is the best thing he’s ever done. Another shares Mr. Leslie helps her feel safe and confident on Zoom. Another scholar shares she is not scared to fail and never gives up. Another says Mr. Leslie makes him feel happy and looks forward to coming to school.     We would like to recognize Natalie Sword, counselor at Brigadoon Elementary

    She was nominated by a few scholars. One scholar shares Ms. Sword helped her learn how to handle her problems and make people happy. Another scholar says Ms. Sword is always so nice and puts a smile on her face every day.  Because of you, these scholars say they always feel comfortable talking with Ms. Sword and feel equipped to solve their problems!

    She was nominated by a few scholars. One scholar says Ms. Gregg helped her discover humor and kindness during the pandemic. Another scholar says Ms. Gregg encouraged her to talk more, and she feels happy every day. Another shares Ms. Gregg is kind and helps her achieve her goals.     We would like to recognize Janice Cockerham-Twigg, teacher at Federal Way Public Academy.

    She was nominated by a few scholars. One scholar shares Ms. Cockerham-Twigg makes online learning a blast, and she smiles and laughs more. Another scholar says Ms. Cockerham-Twigg helped her regain her love for English. Another says Ms. Cockerham-Twigg makes her feel happy every day and always makes class fun.     She was nominated by a few scholars. One scholar says Ms. Blair pushes him out of his comfort zone, and he looks forward to coming to school in the morning. Another scholar shares Ms. Blair helped her learn to believe in herself. Another shares Ms. Blair is the best teacher ever.     She was nominated by a scholar who shares Ms. Kinzner positively impacted him and made sure he was giving his best in every class.     We would like to recognize Guy Mann, Campus Security Officer at Kilo Middle School.

    He was nominated by a few scholars. One scholar shares that Officer Mann makes him laugh, offers good advice, and pushes him to do better. One scholar shares that Officer Mann was there to support her. Another scholar shares that Officer Mann is always ready to help in any way and is funny and unforgettable. Another says she appreciates that Officer Mann is kind and genuine, and he always remembers her name. Another scholar shares Officer Mann is kind and helped her when she was feeling down.     We would like to call JoAnne Morganfield, teacher at Valhalla Elementary School.

    She was nominated bya scholar who states he loves being in Ms. Morganfield’s class. He shares Ms. Morganfield does a good job talking him through things. He also said his favorite memory was when Ms. Morganfield gave him the Respect Award. Because of you, this scholar says he has better grades and feels clearer about what he is supposed to do!

    He was nominated by a scholar who shares that Mr. Garcia is organized, caring and a friend who is also kind to her family.     We would like to recognize Kara Sandelin, teacher at Woodmont K-8, forward to be recognized.

    We would like to recognize Tiffany Williams, counselor at Star Lake Elementary.

    She was nominated by a scholar who stated Ms. Williams helps her to feel happy. One of her favorite memories is doing activities and sharing stories in girls’ group.     We would like to recognize Caty Saathoff, teacher at Illahee Middle School.

    A scholar states Ms. Saathoff is one of the most caring teachers she’s ever had, and geometry class was always the highlight of her day. She shares it was reassuring to know she could always talk to Ms. Saathoff.     We would like to recognize Jason Weichert, teacher at Olympic View Elementary School.

    Bert Nelson

    We would like to recognize Bert Nelson, teacher at Meredith Hill Elementary School.

    A student shares Mr. Nelson coordinates traffic at his school no matter what, in every type of weather. He expresses appreciation for Mr. Nelson taking care of students, parents, cars and buses every day, in his words, “for many, many years.” Because of you, this scholar says he feels safe and well cared for!

    We would like to recognize Amy Nelson, teacher at Star Lake Elementary School. She was nominated by a scholar that shares Ms. Nelson was kind, always prepared and organized, and made learning fun and enjoyable. She expresses appreciation for Ms. Nelson’s support whenever she needed help with school work, and states Ms. Nelson was a very dedicated person. This student said because of you she feels her school community is a better place!

    We would like to recognize Angela Heigh, teacher at Valhalla Elementary School. A scholar shares Ms. Heigh was her kindergarten teacher, and in her words, “my safe place is still with Ms. Heigh.” She states Ms. Heigh was supportive and that she always helped her with school. The scholar says because of you she is smart, safe, kind and productive — and you make her feel loved!
