Scholar Advisory to the Superintendent
-
The Scholar Advisory to the Superintendent is now in its 6th year, and scholars continue to engage with the superintendent each month and share the student perspective of how things are going in the district. The scholar advisory convened for the first time on October 17, 2016.
The advisory is made up of over 30 diverse scholars that represent all secondary schools in FWPS. The advisory meets throughout the school year, and Dr. Pfeiffer uses advisory discussions to help inform her work on behalf of all scholars attending Federal Way Public Schools. Each school year, a new cohort of student scholars are invited to be part of the Scholar Advisory to the Superintendent.
Activities and Accomplishments
The inaugural Scholar Advisory drafted a recommendation to the Federal Way Public Schools’ Board of Directors to include scholar representation at board meetings. As a result of this input, two scholar representatives from the advisory now serve at board meetings and provide valuable input on behalf of all of scholars in Federal Way Public Schools. More information, including the most recent scholar board representatives, is available here: https://www.fwps.org/Page/7699
In the 2017-18 school year, the Advisory created a monthly award, the “Because of You” award, to honor staff that have had a positive impact on a scholar, school and/or the community.
Students who serve on the advisory also have opportunity to learn about careers in the local community through site visits to local companies such as Amazon, Federal Way City Hall and Lakehaven Water and Sewer District.
