SENIOR AEROSPACE SCIENCE INSTRUCTOR

Major Barry Jones started the AFJROTC program at Todd Beamer High School in 2005. Before coming to Federal Way, he was the senior AFJROTC instructor at Provo High School in Provo, Utah for three years. So, he is starting his 16th year in AFJROTC.
Major Jones graduated from Blackfoot High School, Blackfoot, Idaho. He then went to college and, subsequently, served a two-year mission for his church in the Republic of the Philippines.
Major Jones received his commission into the United States Air Force at Brigham Young University; graduating as a Distinguished Graduate. Over the course of 20 years, he served as an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Launch Officer, flight commander, and missile staff instructor at Ellsworth Air Force Base (AFB), South Dakota and Vandenberg AFB, California respectively. He then became an Air Force Senior ROTC Instructor and Commandant of Cadets at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, Prescott, Arizona and taught national security policy. Subsequently, Major Jones attended the USAF Logistics Planning School in Colorado and then moved his family to Royal Air Force Chicksands in the United Kingdom where he became the Chief of Logistics Plans at the 442nd Air Base Group. While assigned at RAF Chicksands, he participated in Desert Storm as the Director of Logistics for an F117 squadron in Saudi Arabia. Major Jones was then assigned to HQ US Air Forces in Europe, Ramstein Air Base, Germany as an International Political-Military Affairs Officer in the Plans and Programs Directorate. During this assignment, he worked various issues with Western and Eastern European countries and attended a military officer course at Haus Rissen Institute for International Politics and Economics in Hamburg, Germany. After this assignment, Major Jones returned to the United Kingdom to work in the International Affairs Branch at Headquarters Third Air Force where he coordinated and negotiated international issues with Her Majesty’s Government and other nations in Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa. During this time, he also worked with the United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs after attending the UN’s Civil-Military Coordination Basic and Staff Courses in Geneva, Switzerland. Major Jones participated, as a member of the US Joint Task Force, in Operation Shining Hope; providing humanitarian support to thousands of refugees located in Albania.
After his retirement, Major Jones worked as a Civil-Military Affairs consultant with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. He deployed with the UN in support of humanitarian operations in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Liberia, Western Africa.
Major Jones earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science (emphasis in international affairs and Middle East studies) from Brigham Young University. He earned a Master’s Degree in Political Science (emphasis in international affairs and Middle East studies) from the University of South Dakota. He completed the USAF’s Squadron Officer and Air Command and Staff Colleges and Academic Instructor School. He attended Bates Technical College and earned his Career and Technical Education teaching certificate.
Major Jones has been married to his wife Debbie for 42 years, and they have 4 children and 14 grandchildren.
