HIV/AIDS KNOW Prevention Curriculum Preview Nights

  • Families of Federal Way Public Schools students in grades 5 through 12 are invited to preview the district’s HIV/AIDS prevention curriculum on:

    Thursday, November 15, 2018

    6:00-8:00 p.m., Room 104, Educational Service Center, 33330 8th Ave. S., Federal Way

    OR

    Thursday, February 21, 2019

    6:00-8:00 p.m., Room 104, Educational Service Center, 33330 8th Ave. S., Federal Way

     

    The district has adopted the KNOW Curriculum (Grades 5-12) for this area of study. This curriculum focuses on the transmission and prevention of the disease, emphasizing abstinence.

    Curriculum will be presented in different rooms according to grade level so that that parents have the opportunity to preview the specific materials that will be used in their child’s classroom.

    This preview is offered in accordance with the AIDS Omnibus Bill (2SSB 6221) of the State of Washington, which was passed in 1988. The AIDS Omnibus Bill indicates the following:

    Sec. 402: “Students shall receive such (AIDS) education at least once each school year beginning no later than fifth grade,”

     and

    Sec. 402: “No student may be required to participate in AIDS prevention education if the student’s parents or guardian, having attended one of the district presentations, objects in writing to the participation.”
