HIV/AIDS and Sexual Health

  • In Federal Way Public Schools, we are committed to equipping each scholar with the tools they need to become thriving, confident, responsible individuals through our focus on the whole child, goal 2 of our strategic plan. We believe our families are critical partners in each child’s learning, and strong family partnerships are essential to meeting this goal. In support of this,  we are sharing the curriculum that we use to teach the WA State sexual health standards.

In Federal Way Public Schools scholars in grades 5 through 12 are offered instruction in HIV/AIDS prevention and sexual health.

This follows AIDS Omnibus Bill (2SSB 6221) of the State of Washington, which was passed in 1988, as well as Senate Bill 5395. The AIDS Omnibus Bill indicates the following:

Sec. 402: “Students shall receive such (AIDS) education at least once each school year beginning no later than fifth grade,”

RCW 28A.300.475 Comprehensive sexual health education states (1)(a)(i) In accordance with the requirements of this section, every public school shall provide comprehensive sexual health education to each student by the 2022-23 school year.

We host Family Preview Nights in accordance to AIDS Omnibus Bill (2SSB 6221) of the State of Washington, which states:

Sec. 402: “No student may be required to participate in AIDS prevention education if the student’s parents or guardian, having attended one of the district presentations, objects in writing to the participation.”
