Member Experience
FWPS AmeriCorps members make a difference in the lives of young people by serving in AVID elective classrooms, core-subject classrooms (Math, Science, English, & History), and after-school programming. AVID is a college and career readiness system that equips scholars with the skills to succeed. AVID is the primary focus of our program. AmeriCorps members facilitate small study groups called tutorials in the elective. Members will guide a group of seven students through a 10-step process to support their academic achievement, learning, and much more. Core-subject classroom support takes our provided services up a notch. By being in the classroom supporting the learning environment, members are able to provide one-on-one or small-group tutoring. Each member serves in a team dynamic as they are assigned to one middle school or high school location.
Members receive ongoing training and professional development to reinforce best practices in the field of education in an inclusive environment designed to foster their professional development, practice, and leadership skills.

Service Benefits
The full-time Segal Education Award is equivalent to the maximum value of the Pell Grant. This award has a 7-year life span and can pay qualified student loans, tuition, and other post-secondary education expenses.
AmeriCorps alumni gain access to a network of colleges and universities that offer additional scholarship opportunities to AmeriCorps members. Some institutions will even match the Education Award! You can check the Schools of National Service listing here.
A network of employers across private, public, and nonprofit sectors view AmeriCorps members as preferred hires because they understand the value that members can bring to their organizations. As AmeriCorps alumni, you get to add this quality experience to your resume and gain access to this network and much more.

In 1983, the Washington state legislature established the Washington Service Corps (WSC) to promote community service and support youth employment. It was the first program of its kind in the nation. A decade later, the federal government created the AmeriCorps national service program, looking at WSC as one of the models for the program’s design.
You’re invited to join us and the Federal Way Public Schools AmeriCorps team in celebrating the WSC 40th anniversary! On May 19th, we’ll be at Celebration Park in Federal Way from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm to do some trail maintenance, weeding, and tree planting. In addition to that in-person event, there will be other ways to connect to current and former sites and members. We'll see you there! Be sure to register by selecting the link below.
