Application Process

What Is My Timeline?

  • Choice Timeline

The Choice Window is Closed for 2019-20.

The Choice Window for 2020-21 will be opening according to the dates below.

Choice Timeline: Applications received during the following dates are either entered into the annual lottery or added to the waiting lists.

    • January 6th - February 7th, 2020 (Entered into the Lottery) - Resident scholars and permanent employees may submit an application online, or through the online form at the schools or at the Educational Service Center (ESC) by the deadline to be entered into the lottery.
    • June 1 - August 31, 2020 (Post-lottery/waitlisted) – Resident scholars may submit an application online, at the schools or at the ESC.
    • August 1 - 31, 2020 (Post-lottery/waitlisted) – Non-resident scholars may submit an application online, at the schools or at the ESC.
    • All post-lottery applicants will be placed on a post-lottery waiting list in the order received based on the District’s established priorities (Resident Permanent Employee, Sibling, Resident, Non-Resident Permanent Employees, and Non-Resident).
      • "Waiting List" applicants are contacted by the Business Office by phone beginning August 1 through the 10th school day if a placement becomes available.
      • Accepted scholars will have 5 business days to be enrolled at the "choice" school and sign the acceptance letter. Scholars not enrolled by the end of the 5th business day will have forfeited their acceptance.
      • Final placement determination will take place on the 10th school day and notifications will be mailed by the 15th school day.
    • All applications must be date-stamped received by the Business Office, 33330 8th Avenue South, Federal Way, by 4:30 PM on the last day of the application windows outlined above. Any application received outside the application window will be denied.

IMPORTANT: Scholars are expected to be enrolled and attending their current or resident area school while waiting for space to become available for choice enrollment at their requested school.  If or when space becomes available at the requested school, the student's enrollment and records will be transferred to the "choice" school upon the parent signing the acceptance letter and contacting the new school.  The office of the "choice" school will notify the parent of their scholar's start date at their school.

What Does “Space Available” Mean?

  • The number of "choice enrollment" openings available for the upcoming year is determined by the Chief Financial Officer/Designee, using a variety of resources. It is possible that some schools will have NO immediate openings designated for Choice Enrollment.

All Choice placement is contingent upon space availability.

How Are “Choice” Applications Processed?

  • Pre-Lottery

    • All applications received by the lottery deadline (see What is My Timeline section for details) are entered into a central database which is used to calculate the number of applicants versus available space at each school. The lottery to determine the placement status of each applicant is open to the public and held at the Educational Service Center. (Attendance at the lottery is not required.) Notification will be provided to all participants by March 13th, 2020.

    Post-Lottery

    • All applications received during the post-lottery open enrollment will be placed on the requested school’s wait list in the order received based on the District’s established priorities.  Final placement determination will take place by the 10th school day.  Notification of placement determination will be mailed to all applicants by the 15th school day.
    • Scholars not placed in their requested school must remain at their present or resident school.

Are There Any Priorities?

  • Choice Enrollment applications are processed for the lottery and post-lottery based on the following priorities:

    • Resident Permanent Employee Priority: Priority One
      • Scholars of permanent employees will have priority placement, pending space availability.
    • Sibling Priority: Priority Two
