Knowledge Testing (written test) and Skills Test (on road)

  • Re-Test Policy: The Department of Licensing (DOL) reserves the right to conduct random re-examinations; applicants refusing to take a re-examination may have their license revoked.  

    DOL testing is only open to students who have taken the Traffic Safety Class through the Federal Way Public Schools.  ALL phases of the Traffic Safety program must be completed prior to any testing taking place.   The phases include the classroom portion and behind the wheel (drives).   Students will not be able to take the Knowledge or Skills Test  if there is a balance on their account.  

    During the school year the DOL Knowledge Test (written) is being offered each week at the High Schools.   DOL Knowledge Test Schedule is posted on the main page under upcominig events. Your Driver's Ed tuition pays for two attempts of taking the Knowledge test, re-take exam fee for the third attempt is $20.00, must be paid prior to taking the test.  This fee can be paid at your high school finance office or at the Traffic Safety Office.

    You NEED to bring the following:

    1. Your permit
    2. Picture ID (if permit does not have a picture)
    3. Pencil

Skills Test (on road)

  • You can schedule your Skills Test on the home page of our traffic safety web-site under SKILLS TEST SCHEDULING located in the left hand margin. You must have successfully completed the Traffic Safety Class and passed the Knowledge Test in order to schedule the skills test.  ALL phases of the Traffic Safety program must be completed prior to any testing taking place.   The phases include the classroom portion and behind the wheel (drives).   Students will not be able to take the Knowledge or Skills Test  if there is a balance on their account.     Students who took the Traffic Safety class before March 4, 2013 will need to pay $50.00 to take the Skills Test.
