  •  Contact image for Dr. James Crawford Federal Way Public Schools is committed to the development of an exemplary curriculum that sets rigorous, high expectations for scholars and teachers that result in meaningful learning. The overriding goal of the curriculum is to help each scholar realize her or his potential and graduate ready for college, career, and post-secondary experiences. The curriculum establishes a system that ensures scholars have equitable access to learn the same core of significant learnings at a particular instructional level, regardless of the teacher teaching the scholars or the schools attended. Curricular objectives are specified which embed formative assessments early in the instruction to increase the likelihood of scholar access and mastery prior to their being assessed. Research shows that high performing districts have adoption cycles around common curriculum to ensure that scholar achievement is not left to chance. In addition, research that Dr. Robert Marzano’s team conducted for McRel shows that the strongest apparent link to “scholar success” is “opportunity to learn” that is to the extent to which the school (1) clearly articulates its curriculum, (2) monitors the extent to which teachers cover the curriculum, and (3) aligns its curriculum with the assessments to measure scholar achievement. Thus it is FWPS’s responsibility to provide scholars access to culturally-competent, standards-aligned curriculum in all core subjects.  Please take a minute to meet our teams that support our schools and scholars.
