    Margot Hightower

    Principal of Green Gables Elementary

    Dear Green Gable Families,

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! I love being the principal at Green Gables. This is my 6th year in this learning community, and 30th year in education. I am fortunate to work a second year with Springy Yamasaki who is a Principal on Special Assignment (POSA) for this school year. Everyone is excited to have students back in our classrooms and get this year started!

As we embark on the new school year, we invite you to become actively involved in your child’s education at home and in the many volunteer opportunities here at school. We have to work together, as a team, we can make great things happen for our scholars.

Families and other community members play a critical role as partners in supporting both your students at home and work in the schools. We look forward to working with you throughout the year to make important decisions that affect both your child as an individual and the school as a whole. As a start to this partnership, we hope you will join the PTA, read with your child 20-30 minutes a day, attend once a month family nights and ask your child what they are learning or what they like about school.

To stay up-to-date on what is happening throughout the year, you may join us once a month for coffee with the principal, read our monthly newsletters sent via email, read your teachers newsletters sent home and participate in student led conferences two times a year.

At Green Gables, we believe passionate educators connect the hearts and the minds of all learners by maximizing individual potential. We believe students take charge of their learning through project-based approaches that prepare our students for the 21st century. We believe that students’ best learning comes from a brain friendly environment that promotes a child-centered classroom community, and supports individual, academic, emotional, and social needs. We look forward to collaborating with you this year in helping your child meet their learning goals. We will ensure an equitable system for supporting student behavior that values and respects the development of the whole child, while teaching them through mediation and restorative practices.

We know each student is an individual, bringing unique talents and needs to school every day. We pride ourselves on the opportunities that we have available to help each and every student child succeed. These opportunities are included in our academic programming, which ensures each student is challenged appropriately, while building a foundation of knowledge and skills. In addition to basic core subjects, students have access to extracurricular activities and other resources (such as the library and STEAM (science/technology/engineering/arts/mathematics) that help them develop their strengths, interests and talents. Green Gables is a national award winning Green Ribbon School. Our students recycle, reduce and re-use. We have a community garden and invite you to participate with planting, growing, harvesting and weeding. We offer a wide range of services that support the total child, including social/emotional supports, counseling, tutoring and more. Always, we are looking to the future, searching for new strategies to help students succeed—and preparing them for what comes next.

This work is not easy however; Green Gables is a community of professionals. We all—teachers, administrators, school counselor, support staff and the many others working with us—are collaborating to create a safe, supportive, welcoming learning community where all students are treated equitably and have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Green Gables is a wonderful learning community. I feel so privileged to be a part of it. This is a very special place, and my colleagues and I appreciate the trust that you have shown in us by sending your children here every day. We will do our best to ensure they have a fulfilling, happy and safe year.
