Transition: Frequently Asked Questions
- When will students be attending the middle schools and the 9th–12th grade high schools? Students will begin attending middle schools and 9th–12th grade high schools in September of 2003 when school starts.
- What school will my child attend? Who decided that? A Boundary Committee composed of parents, students, and staff recommended the new secondary school boundaries to the School Board. A copy of the map detailing those boundaries and a list of the schools involved is available at the Community Resource Center in SeaTac Mall.
- Why are we changing to middle schools? It is good for students academically because it allows the 6th and the 9th graders to attend their new school for one full year before taking the WASL. It is economically better for taxpayers because it helps with the overcrowding at the elementary school level, without additional new building construction.
- What are the advantages for my child? In the new reconfigured secondary schools your child will be with a smaller number of students each day and with a smaller number of staff each day, creating stronger relationships and enhancing learning. Students will move between classes less often, enhancing safety.
- Will it change the secondary sports programs? Barring any state monetary cutbacks, the addition of 6th grade sports programs should give your child more opportunities to participate.
- Does my child have to pass the WASL (Washington Assessment of Student Learning) test to graduate from high school? This year’s 7th graders, the graduating class of 2008, will be the first class required by the state to pass the WASL in order to graduate. They will also be required by the state to develop a 13th year post-secondary plan and a high school cumulative project.
- Will my 6th/9th grader be OK with the older students? Yes, the schools are developing ways to make sure that contacts between students of different grade levels are more positive.
- Will there be as many elective classes to choose from in the newly configured secondary schools? No. Due to the state’s emphasis on all students meeting certain standards, and severe monetary cutbacks, there will be fewer electives offered.
- Will all the changes take place in 2003? No. Changes to instruction will be phased in over a 3-year period.
- How can I stay updated on this transition? You can go to your child’s junior high or high school and volunteer to be on their Transition Team. To request regular updates, send your e-mail address to: dleavert@fwsd.wednet.edu
