What is Special About Our School?

Ilahee Middle School’s underlying belief is that all students can attain and demonstrate high levels of success. We offer students a rich learning environment focused on the state’s four learning goals. “Houses,” performance-based assessments, portfolio conferences, and advisories are integral factors at Illahee, Native American for A Place Like Home.

In the fall of 1999, Illahee began the “house” system. At the 6th and 7th grades, an Illahee “house” is two core subject teachers who instructionally share about 60 students and loop with them from 6th to 7th grade. Houses and looping create a more personalized environment, consistent teacher expectations, and a smooth integration of curriculum. We believe that by looping from 6th to 7th grade with our students, we create positive relationships with our students and their families and we are able to better meet the academic needs of our students. Our 8th graders begin the transition to high school by having six different teachers, with one of those teachers being their Advisory teacher.

Since becoming a middle school, Illahee enthusiastically added two classes of 5th graders. This is a choice lottery program for students who are ready socially and/or academically for middle school. Many of the 5th graders have siblings who attend or attended Illahee. All 5th graders are enrolled in daily performance music or an intervention class and physical education. Illahee is also home to the district’s deaf and hard of hearing program for middle school students. Our deaf and hard of hearing students are mainstreamed with interpreters into academic classes, electives, and physical education. Specialized instruction is also available for our deaf and hard of hearing students, if needed.

It is our belief that “Students Show What They Know.” Illahee students demonstrate mastery skills and concepts in a variety of ways, including objective tests, standardized tests, and student projects. Students meet with a portfolio teacher and a parent during portfolio teacher and a parent during portfolio conferences to discuss their progress and set goals for improvement in the areas of reading, writing, and math. All eight graders develop a 12-year plan, which helps them set goals for high school and beyond.

In addition to an elective or music, our students have physical education one hour each day. As a 7th and 8th grader, students can elect to participate in our Conditioning program in which the students take physical fitness to a higher level. Our physical fitness program provides discipline, goal setting, teambuilding, and a healthy lifestyle.

Illahee Middle School provides a variety of co-curricular programs. Electives currently offered are Art, Computers, math, Vocabulary, Drama, Yearbook, Reading, General Music, Band, Choir, and Orchestra. Students also participate in after school athletics and clubs.
