What is Special About Our School?
Wildwood Elementary School is an inclusive and supportive learning community. This school’s mission is to provide a positive, safe, and motivating environment in which all students acquire the skills necessary to become contributing members of the world community.
Since 1998, Wildwood has significantly improved our WASL scores. In 1998, just 22% of our 4th graders students passed the Math WASL. This year, 65 % passed. 3rd grade students performed higher on the reading WASL than last year with 67% of students passing. We credit our “Success for All” reading program that provides each child with 90 minutes of uninterrupted reading instruction at his/her reading level every day. We also have many supports for children who haven’t yet reached grade level standard in reading including one on one tutoring and Soar to Success, Fast Track, and Comprehension Toolkit.
Our school teaches writing through writing workshop using Lucy Calkins curriculum. Last year, we saw an small increase in scores in the 4th grade to 46%. This was our first year focusing on writing workshop school wide. We are encouraged in our second year of building-wide implementation!
Our 5th grade students increased their performance in science. Our school has concentrated on increasing the use of investigation/inquiry tools that make K-5 science learning aligned to the Grade Level Expectations.
Our learning plan focuses on continued improvement in reading with a greater focus on math and writing. We added supports for the children to meet the standards for math including an after school math program that focuses on problem solving and computational fluency. For our advanced learners, we have GATE (Gifted and Talented Program) for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders.
Wildwood’s programs are strengthened by community involvement. Parents, grandparents, other students, and area businesses donate hundreds of volunteer hours that benefit the school. The school climate fosters responsibility and caring.
No Child Left Behind Report Card
The No Child Left Behind Act requires all schools and school districts in the United States to prepare annual reports for parents and the public detailing their academic achievement. The State Superintendent of Public Instruction’s Web site makes this information available on-line. For more information about the NCLB Act, go to http://www.nclb.gov/index.html. For a hard copy of your Federal Way Public Schools’ district or school report card, please request one from your child’s school.
