What is Special About Our School?
Open for the first time in September 1993, Green Gables is located just north of the King/Pierce County line in the southwest region of the Federal Way School District. Our school contains eight K-2nd primary rooms and eight 3rd-5th grade intermediate classrooms. Students stay with the same teacher for three years. We give and expect respect, love, happiness, and high standards from all who work and learn here. We are focused on best practices, and our teachers are experts at creating meaningful work experiences that help students stay engaged and excited to learn. The school also houses a self-contained special education program and a before and after school daycare program open 6:30-9:15 a.m. and 3:50-6:30 p.m.
Our special education students and gifted students are mainstreamed into our multiage classrooms. Students and teachers use developmental continuums and assessments to determine an individualized academic plan for each student. Through readers’ and writers’ workshops, as well as Everyday Mathematics, students are given instruction at their appropriate levels.
In support of our mission and philosophy, our learning plan focuses on; 1) Helping every child one year or more below level in reading to make 1.5 years gain in one year’s time; 2) Supporting students through a before-school reading and mathematics program; 3) Assessing students’ developmental levels in reading and writing and teaching them on the basis of these assessments; 4) Ensuring that students have meaningful work that is driven by their choices, in content that is right for their level.
Parental involvement and volunteer activities such as student tutoring, Parent Network Team, office assistance, PTA activities, and membership on School Leadership Teams and others are welcome. The No Child Left Behind Act requires all schools and school districts in the United States to prepare annual reports for parents and the public detailing their academic achievement. Green Gables’ funds are used to train teachers in writing and thinking skills, purchase materials, computer equipment, laser printers and music technology equipment. ASB funds provide clothing and shoes for students, field trip admission, and rewards and incentives for classrooms and extracurricular activities.
