Board of Education Accepts Tom Madden’s Resignation

Applicants Sought for Board of Directors Seat, District Four

The members of the Federal Way Public Schools Board of Education last night accepted the resignation of Thomas P. Madden, director of District Four, effective April 22, 2008. A Federal Way businessman, Madden joined the board on May 24, 2005, replacing Earl VanDorien, Jr., who resigned in April, 2005.  Madden is a 1976 graduate of Federal Way High School, and a lifetime resident of Federal Way.

The Board of Directors is now accepting applications for the position of director, District 4.  The Board will select a qualified replacement for Madden within 90 days.

Applicants who want to serve on the Board of Education must be U.S. citizens and qualified voters residing within the boundaries of District 4 of the Federal Way School District.   District 4 generally includes the southeast portion of the school district. For a full description and map showing the boundaries of District 4, go to the board webpage.

Board service requires a commitment to attend and participate in two formal business meetings each month, and several board work-studies and planning sessions throughout the year. Board members also participate in a variety of school and community events in order to better understand the needs of our students, schools, staff and parents.

Board directors represent the community. Among other things, they are responsible for:

  1. Adopting policy
  2. Planning and monitoring operations
  3. Controlling expenditures

To become an applicant, you need to submit your letter of interest and completed application form by 12:00 noon on May 16, 2008 to Chris Popich, Administrative Assistant, at the following address:
                        FWPS Board of Education
                        31405 – 18th Avenue South
                        Federal Way, WA  98003

On May 28, 2008 current Board Members will review all applications, narrow the field of applicants to approximately five, and send out interview questions to these finalists. On June 11, 2008, finalists will be interviewed during an open meeting of the Board of Education at 7:00 p.m. in the Board Room. A decision will be made that same evening. The new Board Member will be sworn in on June 24, 2008 and will serve until the next school board election in November 2009.

Please contact Chris Popich at 253-945-2003 for further questions.
