Kindergarten Student Registration To Be Held May 1-15

It’s just around the corner! Kindergarten registration for the 2008-2009 school year will be held May 1-15, 2008. Children must be five years old by August 31, 2008 and proof of immunization and a birth certificate are needed at the time of registration. More details and downloadable forms are available online. Parents may also call their local school for this information.

Kindergarten classes are held in the morning or afternoon. Parents will be asked for their preference of morning or afternoon at the time of registration, and will be notified of the assignment after the registration period is over.  Many Federal Way elementary schools also offer a full-day Kindergarten option at a cost of $230 per month.

Transportation schedules are significant factors in the school’s decision to place a child in a morning or afternoon class. The district works hard to notify families of Kindergarten-aged children about the May registration period, so that the district and parents can plan well in advance. Parents are asked to remember that the original assignment might change if a significant change in enrollment takes place between May and the beginning of school. Staff will make every effort possible NOT to change a child’s original assignment.

Most schools host a “Kindergarten Round-Up” registration and information program for all new students and parents. Please see the schedule of Kindergarten Round-Ups.

To register, parents should take their child to their neighborhood school during school hours or during the scheduled Kindergarten Roundup. Parents who do not know which school is the neighborhood school can consult the district website or contact Geri Walker at (253) 945-2071.

Parents who wish to enroll their Kindergarten-aged student at a school outside of the neighborhood, but within Federal Way, should fill out a choice enrollment form. These forms are available at all elementary schools and at the Educational Service Center, 31405 18th Ave. South, in Federal Way. Choice enrollment applications for elementary students will be accepted at the Educational Service Center through May 10.  For more information on Federal Way Public Schools’ choice enrollment program, go to http://www.fwps.org/info/choice/ or call Paula Curtis at 253-945-2013.
