English As A Second Language Program
2110

The Federal Way School District is committed to offering an equal educational opportunity for every student. While English is the basic language of instruction in the district’s schools, the Federal Way School District has adopted an English as a Second Language program as its instructional model for children whose primary language is not English, and whose English skills are sufficiently deficient.

This model provides a transitional program until the students are fully able to function in the mainstream both academically and socially. Students (K-12) are given an opportunity to interact with students in the mainstream while acquiring a level of English proficiency that will allow them to succeed at grade level.

The district and its staff shall communicate, whenever feasible, with parents or guardians of students in the English as a Second Language program in a language they can understand; provide inservice which would include training for teachers and staff in appropriate instructional strategies and techniques for students of culturally different backgrounds; include suggestions and recommendations to adopt current curriculum materials for the limited English proficient student; and involve parents and community through an advisory committee.
