Curriculum Development - 2020P
The curriculum of the Federal Way School District shall be reviewed on a regular basis. The district shall adopt a cycle for review as follows:
1st year Civics and History, Geography
2nd year Mathematics, Science and Technology
3rd year Social, Physical and Life Sciences
4th year Reading and Communications
5th year Writing and Arts
6th year Health & Fitness and Career Education
7th year Special Program
The Superintendent/designee shall establish procedures for curriculum development which provide for involvement of community representatives and staff members at appropriate times, the annual review of selected areas on a cyclical basis, and any suggested changes that should be made as a result of the curriculum study. Such review shall take place at least once during each seven-year period (refer to 2311P).
New Courses/Pilot Programs
All new courses, pilot programs or major modifications to existing courses must be approved by the Superintendent/ designee prior to implementation. The Superintendent/
designee, in turn, shall inform the Board before the new course or major revision to an existing course is implemented.
Staff proposing that a new course or pilot program be implemented shall complete a "New Program/Course Proposal" form. The information contained on this form must include detailed information on the course, the need for the course, what materials will be needed, the cost of implementing the course, and specific information on how the course correlates to Washington State Goals and Federal Way School District Course Expectations.
After signatures are obtained from the initiating staff person, department head, and principal, the form shall be sent to the Chief Academic Officer in the Curriculum Department for review and approval.
Upon approval, a course number will be assigned and entered into the Management Information System.
Approval for pilot programs shall be granted for a one-year period of time, after which the building staff shall evaluate the effectiveness and need of the continuing the course. After approval by the Chief Academic Officer, the proposal will be sent to the Board for approval.
