High School Career and Technical Education Elective

This class enables students to develop continuing skills relating to growing and caring for plants, flowers, trees, and shrubs. This program is designed to give students the opportunity to advance their skills in employable plant/flower care and develop floral design skills. Students will also apply scientific principles as they relate to plants/flowers and their environment.

1. The student will have a working knowledge of plant parts, plant functions, and will be able to successfully identify and propagate plants.

To meet this standard, the student will:

  • 1. 1 Develop a plan for flower/plants sales for the school year.
  • 1.2 Communicate with other students and the public regarding plants/flowers.
  • 1.3 Recognize and explain plant/flower environmental needs.
  • 1.4 Write descriptions for plant/flower care.
  • 1.5 Record journal entries for projects on plants/flowers.

2. The student will investigate and understand methods of plant/flower propagation and floral design.

To meet this standard, the student will:

  • 2.1 Recognize and choose plants/flowers based on life cycles for projects.
  • 2.2 Identify the value of comparing and contrasting different types of floral designs.
  • 2.3 Account for value versus price of plants/flowers.

3. The student will apply scientific principles in solving, understanding, and designing plant and flower problems.

To meet this standard, the student will:

  • 3.1 Grow and produce successful plan/flower projects.
  • 3.2 Develop an effective method of solving plant/flower problems.
  • 3.3 Identify the components for successful floral design.

4. The student acquires job skills and applies skills and knowledge to future job/career opportunities.

To meet this standard, the student will:

  • 4.1 Investigate job shadow opportunities in Horticulture.
  • 4.2 Analyze skills learned in class and apply skills in a job situation.
  • 4.3 Develop proficiency at creating resumes, completing job applications, and participating in interviews.
  • 4.4 Demonstrate the ability to communicate as a life-long skill.
