This class enables students to begin developing basic skills relating to growing and caring for plants, flowers, trees, and shrubs. This program is designed to give students actual hands-on experience of a working greenhouse and florist. Students will also apply scientific principles as they relate to plants/flowers and their environment.
1. The student will have a working knowledge of plant parts, plant functions, and will be able to successfully identify and propagate plants.
To meet this standard, the student will:
- 1. 1 Accurately keep a written journal on plant conditions and experiments
- 1.2 Network with peers on written journal data.
- 1.3 Understand the value of comparison and contrasting journal entries on plan and flower projects.
2. The student will acquire knowledge and practical application in growing plants and flowers.
To meet this standard, the student will:
- 2.1 Develop working knowledge of growing plants and flowers.
- 2.2 Apply scientific principles to growing plants and flowers In a variety of conditions (photosynthesis, respiration, transpiration, etc.).
- 2.3 Explain and demonstrate the ability to propagate plants using different methods (sexual, asexual).
- 2.4 Recognize basic anatomy of plant/flower parts.
- 2.5 Demonstrate the ability to identify and control plan pests.
3. The student will apply scientific principles in solving and understanding plant and flower problems.
To meet this standard, the student will:
- 3.1 Communicate effectively with peers and staff regarding plant successes and concerns.
- 3.2 Develop and use deductive reasoning in solving plant problems.
- 3.3 Identify the components for successful plant growth.
- 3.4 Produce plant projects that are healthy and correct for a specific environment.
4. The student acquires job skills and applies skills and knowledge to future job/career opportunities.
To meet this standard, the student will:
- 4.1 Explore career opportunities available in Horticulture.
- 4.2 Analyze the future possibilities in the Horticulture Industry.
- 4.3 Investigate post-secondary employment options in Horticulture.
- 4.4 Examine job skills and employment prospects.
- 4.5 Practice communication as a lifelong skill.
