High School Career and Technical Education Elective

Unifying focus The student will be exposed to the more intricate diagnosis and repair of automobiles that involve processes other than routine maintenance. This training will prepare them for entry into the apprentice process in the automotive technician trades.
1. The students will learn about and use the technical language of the automotive trades to integrate themselves into the trade through effective communication.
To meet this standard the students will:
- 1.1 Demonstrate communication skills to understand and translate customer concerns.
- 1.2 Effectively communicate with parts and equipment sales persons to obtain correct parts and equipment
- 1.3 Read, interpret and implement repair manual information to maintain correct repairs
2. The students will be led through the following curricular areas. Through this knowledge, the student will be able to maintain an automobile autonomously.
- 2.1 Precision measurement on engine components
- 2.2 Engines, assembly and disassembly
- 2.3 Complete tune up
- 2.4 Automatic transmission service
- 2.5 Clutch operations and repair
- 2.6 Brakes, operation and repair
- 2.7 Suspension, diagnosis and adjustment, repair
- 2.8 Exhaust system diagnosis and installation
- 2.9 Electrical system diagnosis and repair
- 2.10 Information system usage and repair orders usage.
3. The student will apply facts gained through content areas listed above to make intelligent choices and begin the process of diagnostics by:
- 3.1 Using knowledge obtained to examine what operational conditions exist currently.
- 3.2 Using current knowledge to understand how the item is supposed to work.
- 3.3 Using testing rules to devise tests to ascertain what the malfunction is caused by.
- 3.4 Using test results to arrive at a conclusion that is following rules of logic and that when repairs are made, the repairs are successful.
4. The student will apply knowledge learned in this class to begin working in the industry, whether by means of job shadowing or gainful employment by:
- 4.1 Building a resume showing skills mastered.
- 4.2 Applying for jobs from a list supplied at the classroom level.
- 4.3 Maintaining that job for extended periods by following the rules of leadership taught in class.
- 4.4 Consider from information provided what long-term education goals are appropriate and how to achieve those post secondary goals.
