Math Matters 5-6
1. The student understands and applies the concepts and procedures of mathematics.
- 1.1 understands and applies basic properties and order of operations
- 1.2 simplifies and evaluates algebraic expressions
- 1.3 solves linear equations, quadratic equations, and systems of equations, formulas and literal equations
- 1.4 solves equations containing absolute value, inequalities, sets, and solutions sets
- 1.5 adds, subtracts, multiplies, divides, and simplifies polynomials and uses factoring patterns
- 1.6 uses complex rational expressions, ratio and proportion
- 1.7 constructs graphs on a number line and on a coordinate plane
- 1.8 graphs systems of equations and inequalities
- 1.9 simplifies radical expressions
- 1.10 understands how changes in dimension affect perimeter, area, and volume
- 1.11 measures objects and events directly or uses indirect methods (such as the volume of a cone, given its height and diameter)
- 1.12 calculates rate and other derived and indirect measurements
- 1.13 understands that the precision and accuracy of measurement is affected by the measurement tools and calculating procedures
- 1.14 compares, describes, and classifies 2- and 3-dimensional geometric figures
- 1.15 constructs geometric models and scale drawings using tools as appropriate (for example, in designing a house plan)
- 1.16 understands and uses coordinate grids
- 1.17 identifies simple differences between geometric properties of a plane and a sphere
- 1.18 understands and uses properties of symmetry, similarity, and congruence
- 1.19 understands and constructs multiple geometric transformations using combinations of translation, reflection, or rotation
- 1.20 uses a variety of tools and technologies to perform geometric constructions
- 1.21 recognizes, creates, extends, and generalizes patterns, sequences, and series
- 1.22 understands, develops, and expresses rules describing patterns
- 1.23 represents situations that involve variable quantities with expressions, formulas and equations, and inequalities
- 1.24 evaluates and simplifies expressions
- 1.25 creates and solves equations and inequalities
2. The student uses mathematics to define and solve problems.
- 2.1 identifies what information is missing or extraneous and compensates for it
- 2.2 develops algebraic expressions
- 2.3 applies appropriate methods, operations, and processes to construct a solution
- 2.4 shows all steps in problem solving
3. The student uses mathematical reasoning.
- 3.1 makes and tests predictions and inferences to either support or contradict them
- 3.2 checks for reasonableness of results
- 3.3 supports arguments and justifies results using inductive and deductive reasoning
- 3.4 reflects on and evaluates procedures and results and makes necessary revisions
4. The student communicates knowledge and understanding in both everyday and math language.
- 4.1 expresses ideas and situations using mathematical language and notations in appropriate and efficient form
- 4.2 collects, organizes, clarifies, and refines mathematical information by reflecting, verbalizing, discussing, or writing
5. The student understands how mathematical ideas connect within mathematics, to other subject areas, and to real-life situations.
- 5.1 applies algebraic formulas to solve problems from work and life situations
- 5.2 integrates the use of a variety of available technologies
- 5.3 investigates the mathematical knowledge and training requirements for occupational or career areas of interest
- 5.4 applies mathematical thinking and modeling in other disciplines
