1st Year Algebra

Prerequisite: Pre Algebra

1. The student understands and applies the concepts and procedures of mathematics.

  • 1.1 understands and applies basic properties and order of operations
  • 1.2 simplifies and evaluates algebraic expressions
  • 1.3 solves linear equations, quadratic equations, and systems of equations, formulas and literal equations
  • 1.4 solves equations containing absolute value, inequalities, sets, and solutions sets
  • 1.5 adds, subtracts, multiplies, divides, and simplifies polynomials and uses factoring patterns
  • 1.6 uses complex rational expressions, ration, and proportion
  • 1.7 constructs graphs on a number line and on a coordinate plane
  • 1.8 graphs systems of equations and inequalities
  • 1.9 simplifies radical expressions

2. The student uses mathematics to define and solve problems.

  • 2.1 identifies what information is missing or extraneous and compensates for it
  • 2.2 develops algebraic expressions
  • 2.3 applies appropriate methods, operations, and processes to construct a solution
  • 2.4 shows all steps in problem solving

3. The student uses mathematical reasoning

  • 3.1 makes and tests predictions and inferences to either support or contradict them
  • 3.2 checks for reasonableness of results
  • 3.3 supports arguments and justifies results using inductive and deductive reasoning
  • 3.4 reflects on and evaluates procedures and results and makes necessary revisions

4. The student communicates knowledge and understanding in both everyday and mathematical language.

  • 4.1 expresses ideas and situations using mathematical language and notations in appropriate and efficient form
  • 4.2 collects, organizes, clarifies, and refines mathematical information by reflecting, verbalizing, discussing, or writing.

5. The student understands how mathematical ideas connect within mathematics, to other subject areas, and to real-life situations.

  • 5.1 applies algebraic formulas to solve problems from work and life situations
  • 5.2 integrates the use of a variety of available technologies
  • 5.3 investigates the mathematical knowledge and training requirements for occupational or career areas of interest
  • 5.4 applies mathematical thinking and modeling in other disciplines
