9th Grade
Students will demonstrate previous grade-level skills
1. The student writes clearly and effectively.
- 1.1 Demonstrates consistency in focus for a specific purpose and demonstrates elaboration through relevant examples, details, facts, reasons, etc.
- 1.2 Approaches a topic in an individualized and purposeful way.
- 1.3 Continues to use effective organizational structures (including subtitles and bullets) and constructs coherent paragraphs through the use of effective transitions.
- 1.4 Continues to write in a style appropriate to the audience and purpose, choosing words to convey the intended message in a precise, interesting way, using specialized vocabulary relevant to the topic.
- 1.5 Develops a topic or theme with carefully chosen and focused detail and content.
- 1.6 Controls emphasis, sequencing, focus and transitions in a variety of genres.
- 1.7 Writes coherent paragraphs.
- 1.8 Develops analysis, persuasion, and exposition logically.
- 1.9 Uses voice, language, and sentence structure appropriate to the genre, audience, purpose, and topic.
- 1.10 Uses figurative language and sound patterns.
- 1.11 Uses a variety of language and sentence structures appropriate to the genres, audience, purpose, and topic.
- 1.12 Uses a variety of resources to ensure accurate spelling.
- 1.13 Understands and uses knowledge of parts of speech and sentence structure to write sentences that vary in complexity.
- 1.14 Uses a variety of resources to ensure accuracy of punctuation, capitalization, and conventional grammar usage.

2. The student writes in a variety of forms for different audiences and purposes.
- 2.1 Writes for different audiences, identifying and meeting the needs of a chosen audience.
- 2.2 Writes in a variety of forms with increasing length and complexity such as:
- paragraph - journal - report - myths - directions - poetry - essay - story - fable - drama - letter - technical writing - tall tale - experiment
- 2.3 Writes for a variety of purposes such as:
- description - explanation - compare/contrast - information - persuasion - cause/effect - narration - exposition
- 2.4 Creates documents that are used in work settings such as letters, reports, resumes, memos, and letters of application.
3. The student understands and uses the steps of the writing process.
Prewrites
- 3.1 Prewrites using a variety of strategies to generate ideas and plan an appropriate mode of expression.
- 3.2 Uses available tools and technology throughout the writing process.
- 3.3 Uses information
from a variety of sources.
Drafts
- 3.4 Creates a draft by constructing ideas independently and coordinating a number of ideas and points of view.
- 3.5 Presents argumentation
clearly, coherently, and precisely in a logical flow of ideas and relationships.
Revises
- 3.6 Revises by
using a variety of sources to improve text and enhance style.
Edits
- 3.7 Edits through
the use of technology, self-correction, examination of organization
and conventions.
Publishes
- 3.8 Publishes a neat, legible final product through the use of a variety of technological tools.
4. The student analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of written work.
- 4.1 Critiques own, other students', and published works with regard to concept and design, style, and conventions.
- 4.2 Articulates criteria for effective writing and assess own developmental needs in meeting that criteria.
