  • 1.1 Uses attention level, eye contact, and listening strategies appropriate for particular situations.
  • 1.2 Uses listening strategy appropriate to purpose.
  • 1.3 Listens and observes to gain information (e.g., predicts, outcome of a talk, draws conclusions from a talk).
  • 1.4 Listens and observes to identify inferences in oral communication.
  • 1.5 Interprets verbal and nonverbal cues to adjust communication to reflect ongoing responsiveness to audience.
  • 1.6 Analyzes media for audience.
  • 1.7 Analyzes media for content and purpose (e.g., change an attitude, sell a product, sway a vote).
  • 1.8 Analyzes media for technical strategies.
  • 1.9 Analyzes persuasive techniques used in media (e.g., testimonials, appeal to popularity, appeal to emotions, bandwagon, generalizations).
  • 1.10 Explains the basis for multiple interpretations of media (e.g., life experience, frame of reference).
  • 1.11 Detects and analyzes the explicit cultural and value messages contained in media.
  • 1.12 Analyzes the influence of media sources.

  • 3.2 Applies techniques to help a group move toward consensus, propose solutions, or achieve results.
  • 3.3 Encourages group members to contribute ideas and points of view.
  • 3.4 Elaborates on the contribution of other group members (e.g., asks relevant questions, summarizes group comments, offers evaluative feedback).
  • 3.5 Uses problem solving techniques (e.g., identifies the target, defines issues, identifies obstacles, brainstorms, develops a plan).
