The student will demonstrate previous grade-level skills.
- 1.1 Uses attention level, eye contact, and listening strategies appropriate for particular situations.
- 1.2 Uses listening strategy appropriate to purpose.
- 1.3 Listens and observes to gain information (e.g., predicts, outcome of a talk, draws conclusions from a talk).
- 1.4 Listens and observes to identify inferences in oral communication.
- 1.5 Interprets verbal and nonverbal cues to adjust communication to reflect ongoing responsiveness to audience.
- 1.6 Analyzes media for audience.
- 1.7 Analyzes media for content and purpose (e.g., change an attitude, sell a product, sway a vote).
- 1.8 Analyzes media for technical strategies.
- 1.9 Analyzes persuasive techniques used in media (e.g., testimonials, appeal to popularity, appeal to emotions, bandwagon, generalizations).
- 1.10 Explains the basis for multiple interpretations of media (e.g., life experience, frame of reference).
- 1.11 Detects and analyzes the explicit cultural and value messages contained in media.
- 1.12 Analyzes the influence of media sources.
- 1.13 Generates complex questions and complete responses.
- 1.14 Analyzes resources for relevance, reliability, and makes selections based upon purpose, topic, and context.
- 1.15 Checks for group understanding (e.g., observe, question, paraphrases, summarizes).
2. The student communicates ideas clearly and effectively.
- 2.1 Analyzes target audience, specific purpose (e.g., to get a job, to deliver a presentation, to sell a product), and context.
- 2.2 Adjusts content, delivery, and language based upon knowledge of target audience, and purpose
- 2.3 Analyzes audience and purpose to develop appropriate content, delivery, and to select language and grammar.
- 2.4 Analyzes how the connection between form and content creates an effect.
- 2.5 Varies pace, volume, tone, vocabulary, and posture to build rapport with target audience.
- 2.6 Selects an uses effective media to enhance an oral presentation (e.g., posters, audiocassette, flow charts, overheads etc.).
3. The student uses communication strategies and skills to work effectively with others.
- 3.1 Analyzes group task and selects appropriate actions (e.g., assigns roles, set group norms).
- 3.2 Applies techniques to help a group move toward consensus, propose solutions, or achieve results.
- 3.3 Encourages group members to contribute ideas and points of view.
- 3.4 Elaborates on the contribution of other group members (e.g., asks relevant questions, summarizes group comments, offers evaluative feedback).
- 3.5 Uses problem solving techniques (e.g., identifies the target, defines issues, identifies obstacles, brainstorms, develops a plan).
4. The student analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of formal and informal communication.
- 4.1 Practices uses feedback to adjust content and delivery.
- 4.2 Assesses own presentation skills, seeking and evaluating input from others.
- 4.3 Analyze the choices that were made in construction of media.
- 4.4 Contrasts the media-constructed versions of reality with alternative versions of reality.
- 4.5 Analyzes media for commercial implications.
- 4.6 Demonstrates techniques for successful interviews (e.g., researching the requirements of the job, developing rapport with the prospective employer, beginning to prepare a resume and interview portfolio).
