Writing

11th Grade

Students will demonstrate previous grade skills.

1. The student will write clearly and effectively.

  • 1.1 Develops a topic, theme, or central metaphor with carefully chosen and focused detail and content.
  • 1.2 Controls emphasis, sequencing, focus, and transitions in a variety of genres such as poetry, technical, or narrative.
  • 1.3 Develops analysis, synthesis, persuasion, and exposition logically; demonstrates advanced logic.
  • 1.4 Writes coherent paragraphs.
  • 1.5 Uses figurative language and sound patterns effectively.
  • 1.6 Considers connotation and denotation when choosing words.
  • 1.7 Varies the complexity of sentence structure and cadence for effect.
  • 1.8 Uses standard writing conventions to enhance meaning and clarity.
  • 1.9 Further refines correct use of standard grammatical conventions.
  • 1.10 Uses paragraphing and stanza division to reinforce text's organizational structure.
  • 1.11 Understands the concept of and avoids plagiarism.
  • 1.12 Writes legibly.

2. The student writes in a variety of forms for different audiences and purposes.

  • 2.1 Identifies, analyzes, describes, and meets the needs of a chosen audience.
  • 2.2 Shows sense of how a particular audience may interpret a text.
  • 2.3 Writes for a broad range of purposes including: literary analysis, job application, research report, technical essay, reflection, making inferences or drawing conclusions, experimenting with language.
  • 2.4 Writes in a variety of forms and genres (tall tales, myths, fables, reports, experiments, directions, dramas, narratives, journals, poems, essays, stories, etc.).
  • 2.5 Interweaves elements of exposition, argumentation, narration, figurative and rhythmic language as appropriate for audience and purpose.
  • 2.6 Produces technical and non-technical documents for college, job, and career applications, such as a homepage, research report, blueprint, or cover letter.
  • 2.7 Understands the importance of using reference style consistently when writing reports or technical documents sources to improve text; uses language to enrich text and enhance style.

3: The student understands and uses the steps of the writing process.

Prewrites

  • 3.1 Analyzes and synthesizes information from a variety of sources such as interviews, multimedia, books, and periodicals.

    Drafts

  • 3.2 Presents argumentation effectively by using clarity, coherency, and precision; drafts text that uses logical flow of ideas and relationships.

    Revises

  • 3.3 Investigates additional information sources.
  • 3.4 Changes text order to improve argument, flow of information, and logic.

    Edits

  • 3.5 Corrects mechanics and grammar.

    Publishes

  • 3.6 Identifies viable markets and forums for specific pieces of writing.
  • 3.7 Uses a variety of technological resources to produce a final product.

4. The student analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of written work.

  • 4.1 Assesses own strengths and developmental needs as a writer.
  • 4.2 Demonstrates knowledge of the qualities that make a piece of writing effective.
